USS Burns DD-588, Fletcher class destroyer. My grandfather is the dude with his left hand on the barrel, fourth row back. He also served on the USS Davis DD-395 and USS-Prairie AD-15.

The newly rediscovered Burns today, off the California coast. Sunk as a target by the Navy.

Is your grandfather still around? If so thank him for me for his service. Destroyer service is one step away from sub duty, they spent a lot of time half under water.. they used to follow us in rough seas, when I rode the carrier, funny to see the radar dome under the bow,, almost as much as the deck..

He passed a while ago and lived half a country away. Sadly, I only met him a couple times when I was very young.

"Arthur Leipzig's career as a photographer fulfills the ideals of the great era of American photo-journalism. His start with the Photo League of the 1940's, his freelance work in the 1950's and 60's, and his years of full-time teaching with more freedom to choose his assignments in the 1970's and 80's, illustrate the opportunities and hardships of a life in photography. The photographs in this catalogue celebrate Leipzig's art - a life work that has been a sustained creative response to the challenge of photography as a means for expressing fundamental human experience."
