Ok, my steering wheel is in HORRIBLE shape. I'm not too concerned about keeping the car stock so I am thinking of installing an aftermarket "old-school" hot rod steering wheel The problem, is, I want to be sure I can adapt the new steering wheel to the old steering column without losing the tilt & telescoping feature. Has anyone done this or does anyone know if this can be done? Thanx!
Yes, it can. You will need to change some small parts though... I put a Grant wheel on a 70 Cad column about 15 years ago. You will have to figure out something different for the horn ****on, as you'll need to make or find a knob to lock the telescoping slide. The knob can be anything you can twist, but it has to mount in the center of the wheel. This will all be clear once you pull the old wheel off. The steering wheel has no effect on the tilt function of the column.
I've looked at those Cad columns, I have a '68 myself. Looks like it'll take some fab work to get any other wheel on there. My thought is that you'll be best off to cut down the stock wheel until it's just a hub, and make that part into the "adapter" for your other wheel. I'm wondering too if the column isn't too bulky looking to be behind a Superior 500 style steering wheel, you'll need some kind of cover to go behind it or you'll be able to see the turn signal mechanisms and stuff. Do-able, but no simple bolt ons.
We found a parts house adaptor that worked on the Cad splines. I remember it wasn't the same as a Chevy...and that was a LONG time ago; so sorry, can't help with P/N.
