I know there are a bunch of HAMBers from Austin and I could use a bit of help. Having been there once (for SxSW several years ago) the missus and I fell in love with the place. Great music scene, hotrods, food, decent weather, really nice folks. We are seriously considering a move as Massachusetts is insane financially, politicly , the roads suck and so do the winters. We have a 10 1/2 year old son(5th grade-middle school starts next year) . Basically we are looking for a better quality of life. I'm seeing a lot of really good looking rental property (houses only) and getting hits on my resume, so this is starting to look like a real possibility . Any input of school districts, good neighborhoods what to stay away from etc etc in the greater Austin area would be most appreciated. Hope this isn't too OT. Thanks. Jesse
Check out Brentwood Elementary in North Central Austin. The surrounding neighborhoods are Crestview,Brentwood, and Violet Crown. It leads into Lamar Middle School and the McCallum High.Great schools and great place to live.Good Luck
Wimberley Independent School District, south of town, no gang bullshit, and room to roam..............
You will not be alone... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=507835&highlight=move+austin Welcome to Texas
If you can look outside of austin kyle, buda, wimberly, san marcos, and lockhart, luling area just 20 to 30 min away without all the daily austin traffic.Plus plenty of back roads to cruise around on. Texas is a great place it live so come on down!!!!
Be ready to Eat BBQ Drink Shiner Say Ya'll , fixing to, And be called a Yankee, allot , everyday .. Welcome to Texas
I live in San Antonio but I go to Austin all the time to enjoy the scenery, the hot rod and old school chopper scene haha. I go mosly on my chopper but now that I have a running car I'll be up there in that.
Just got married, Austin is where we plan to live. Well more than plan....we are gonna do it! we were looking at round rock area. exact area is not set in stone but im still stoked. good luck with your decision.
Austin negatives: traffic, traffic, over priced housing, and liberal tree huggers. Austin is unique in that it is full of people who couldn't fit in, any normal places in Texas.
I would check out Leander, Round Rock and Cedar Park areas. Close in to Austin without the abnormal prices. Still pricey for Texas though but not compared to where you are. School districts in those areas are good. Near the freeway system but still elbow room. One of my sons lives in Cedar Park and he just loves it. He works downtown and his wife is a teacher in Round Rock system.
I grew up there and worked there 15 years... didn't mean to hit a nerve but truthfully could you imagine taking a handfull of folks off Guadalupe or 6th street (i.e. Leslie) and dropping them into downtown Abilene? LOL! come on....
I went down to Austin once; had a hell of a time. I Wouldn't mind spending time down south. Now if I could only convince my lady to move.
Any one North of the river is a Yankee LOL. If you come to the Austin area be aware that Round Rock and that area is Williamson County and Austin is Travis County. I lived in Round Rock and got along fine but left when the travel time into Austin went from 18 minutes to 45 minutes. IMHO if you're gonna want to go out for a good time or a meal you will be wanting to go to Austin. It's great to live in the country and play in the city but forget your wallet and you're talking 1 1/2 hour turn around to get it.
yea i loved Austin thought about the move my self! but no good job for me at a shop doing rods? and wife has great job with the state here. But Austin is a great place! a little OT but i got 10 acres in nix texas if anyone is interested. won it in a card game years ago never even seen it kinda near austin sorta! haha
AUSTIN is A great town ,BUT you better have a secure job man , I tried it for 3 years and now heading back to CAL. for WORK. OH and as far as trees go, you better get use to the ALLEGORIES here man they will kill ya .........
Thanks ..ya'll for all the great input. Keep it coming. If we've been able to withstand the moonbat good feelings mommy state crew that has held sway up here in Mass. I rekkin we'll get by just fine toleratin' them lib-rels in Austin. Even if they do make fun of me for saying down home Masshole stuff like.."Doodguy , you ain't half as wikkid smaht as ya think you ahh."
Austins GREAT, 45 minutes south on IH 35 you can buy really nice all brick 3-4 bedroom, 21/2 bath, two car garage, (we don't have basements down here) foe 150 k! In the burbs. San Antonio rocks too!
Just outside of town... the Salt Lick... mmm, mmm .. but, why is everyone bringing a cooler ?? " you have to bring your own "Beer"... What ??? Roach
Same deal up here. The rush hour and frequent nighttime roadwork situation in and out of Boston/Cambridge is brutal, even if ya live only 15 miles outside of the city, like us. Don't even get me started on the weather( 6 months of every year), cost of living and politics.
You can bring as much as u want!Huge discount when bought at the store.I'm pretty sure beer is marked up 100% at restaurants. The Salt Lick is only one of many great reasons to live in and around Austin Texas.Move here and come eat BBQ with us every Friday.Check out The Austin Meatheads group here on the HAMB
