Is there something special about this column that would be preferred?

  2. Its a street rod part. They are good colums as a rule but the prefered is an old original colum that goes with your trad build.

No its just a brand new, universal fit steering column generally based on a General Motors design. The advantage here is that its "brand new" and you can get it in chrome.

  4. you just get out your credit card and dial 1-800.................

no walking through junkyards, swap meets or searching classified ads looking for old greasy/rusty parts that you have to modify to fit.

Made in Michigan, USA by really nice folks that actually build hot rods and customs for themselves - Their columns are all new construction, bare steel or chrome - custom lengths available - with or without column keyed hubs - and excellent quailty. Did I mention they're AMERICAN MADE in Michigan?
Check out their ads and install articles in some old fashioned rod magazines!

So, if you don't have a salvage yard full of old cars next door, and you don't have a lathe and welding gear - and years of building knowledge, Ididit is a great choice. But, it must be cool to be so "pure trad" 8-/

BTW, I am not affiliated with Ididit other than just friends of the owners.

Ditto. And it comes with a removeable steering wheel hub. No provision for a steering wheel horn button, but I don't swing that way anywho.

big creep, they used to have them in raw steel many many years ago, I'd imagine they are still available.

Id be curious who manufactures the ones for Summit...probably China.

Hmm, my 63 Riv outside has a factory tilt column, maybe I should find some billet to bolt to it somewhere so it will match.

I put a raw one in a customers car about a month ago.

Woaaaah? This thread is gonna have everything-homemade vs. storebought, US vs. offshore, price vs. quality. What else could you want?

Once again the HAMB naysayers have to rip on a a company that was started in a guys garage and produces a quality product for the aftermarket. Ken and Jane, the owners, are about the nicest people you could ever hope to meet and thier staff is well versed in steering components. Look over thier offerings and if you see something you might be interested in give them a call. If not, move on.............the rest of you assholes, park your opinion where the sun don't shine.:(

BTW, I have no affiliation with this fine company.

Excellent quality steering columns. The best in the business as far as I'm concerned.

    I called 1-800 Mullins roadster column ;)

  25. No offesne but most of us that have been doing this for a long time never had Lathes blah blah. It really isn't that hard to find a usable colum.

I am sure that you really like the fellas at IDIT and I don't doubt that they are good folks just trying to put their kids though med school blah blah. But the bottom line is that an IDIT colum is a Street Rod part. I don't have anything personaly against street rods or street rodders, well maybe street rodders, but we are all about, "Spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and customs to hoodlums world wide..."[quote Ryan Cochran].

If you find it offensive that some of us prefer to do it the hard way maybe you are just on the wrong side of town.

Like I said earlier although an IDIT colum is a good piece it is not the prefered piece. If you look around you can find the correct piece for the particular build you are working on.

My grandad used to tell me that if what I was looking for wasn't hanging on the end of my nose that I would most likely have to look beyond the end of my nose to find it.

    Disclaimer:

That last statement is in no way sahpe or form aimed at the author of this thread, just at those who whine about how hard it is to build a real hot rod or custom.

Oh and fab32 didn't even have cheerios this morning, he is just stating his opinion. Not a damned thing in the world wrong with that.

By the way what do you need a colum for and does it have to be chromed etc? Mayhaps I have one laying around that you could use or know someone that does.

Most of their columns look terrible in an early car. With the exception of the deco column, but for $450 I'll go dig one out of a creek car and put bearings in it.

Wow, why the drama and the profanity? Is that really necessary, especially when trying to convince others how nice those folks are?

Fortunately, I build my car for ME...IF I wanted to use an Ididit, I certainly wouldn't ask ANYONE on the HAMB for their permission, same with any other "street rod" part available at 1 - 800...sometimes carrying the "trad" word gets way out of hand here.

Question: Did you Model A guys upgrade to hydraulic and/or disc brakes...??? Is that "Trad"...??? Did you '32 Ford guys upgrade to Limefire headers...is that "trad". Do any of you run A/C and/or a heater in your car...??? How about safety plate glass...is that "Trad"...??? Hmmmmmmmm, nuff said (and THAT is MY opinion)...

I live in England. Unfortunately we don't have too many scrapyards full of classic American cars so I got my column with an auto shifter in chrome from this fine American company. Several different people drive me around in the kripple kart, which has an non-adjustable bench seat so the tilt facility on mine comes in very handy. Below are a couple of photographs showing how awful it looks it my "Street Rod". I would have posted some pictures of my gold chains too but I didn't have any to hand.

    Later
    Paul,
