That may be the dumbest thing posted in this thread, and that's saying a LOT. Of course that's what they do, it's called reporting. At least there's some accountability there, unlike the Internet where anyone can say anything they want and inevitably someone will take it as fact. Wait, that sounds a lot like religion........our mechanical masters have started their takeover.

My take on the bottom line here...both sides are overstating their importance.

I never have. In fact, if anything, I avoid choosing buddies so people don't make up stories.

Wow- I can't believe I read all this.

    Now my 2 cents.
Hot rodding is about the guy in the garage building his car. It's not about a magazine or an internet site. Neither are the end-all, be-all for me.

Magazines have come & gone & a few have managed to stay. Good for them but that changes nothing in my garage.

Web sites like this have come & gone also. I should know. I was involved in one that was strictly Chevy & walked away from it after 14 years & more invested time & money than I care to disclose. Didn't change a thing in my garage.

The Rodders Journal is about as close to perfect as we get today. However, if it ended at issue 49, wouldn't change a thing in my garage.

Is this site the best there is? Maybe, maybe not. For now, it fills a need. There's a lot to like & alot to dislike. Many have adopted this hotrod "lifestyle" as they put it & are re-inventing the past.
That- is probably the one thing I complain about the most (I was there). So- if JJ closed up tomorrow? I'd be a little sad, have a little more time for other things but it wouldn't change a thing in my garage.

    As for "Janet"
I know who Janet is & know that tone. He spoke at one of our club meetings about a year ago.

I'm guessing if I drop his name- a ban would be in order. I guess I'm not feeling like a hoodlum tonight. Many of you already know who it is.

I think Janet is the new unibomber... I liked the video it was full of exciting stuff, fun stuff. The type of stuff Janet is too stressed out to be a part of. If your really into something, I mean really heartfelt into it , people cant take that away from you. Hamb or magazines? Who cares? If you love Hot Rods, Kustoms, Dragsters, Muscle Cars, or Lowriders just enjoy it.

Ryan: I have only been visiting the H.A.M.B for a couple of years and I have been an Alliance Member for less than a year. But in that short time, the H.A.M.B. has been instrumental in guiding me back to a hobby and lifestyle I had lost touch with. I've made some friends and learned more about these old cars we all love. However, most importantly, I have gained an education of and a respect for the people that created this hobby and the time they lived in. In my mind you have done an excellent job 'spreading the gospel'. There isn't much else I can say that you won't find written somewhere else above. I just wanted to say 'Thank You'.

Janet: I have been reading your magazines for over 3 decades. I've had enough. You blew it. Go f**k yourself. (How's that for 'careless and reckless' speech? Doesn't feel so good when it is aimed at you, does it?)

I'm a HAMB addict. I'm also a FNG and lurker. Mags kept me enticed here and there while I was on hiatus from Hot Rodding. I owe a much to them for re-introducing me to a dormant passion. The HAMB has given me a sense of belonging to something much bigger than me...pushing me to imitate those heroes I gazed upon in the hallowed pages of the few mags I perused in my 31 years. TRJ is "academic," art and passion in print. If it weren't for all of these great things, I wouldn't be staring at the Tub in my garage and seeing the dust off El Mirage swirling hypnotically off the wires.

Not enough words to thank you Ryan...not enough. RF, I appreciate your work too (your Budget Bucket gave me hope in high school). Mr. Coonan, well, ditto on the lack of adjectives.

And to Janet, my deepest sympathies for your lack of understanding.

Having never been one that minded making an ass of himself I have to ask... what is the name of you magazine Kirk? I went to your profile, but I didn't find anything there to help clue me in. I'd like to check it out.

  13. Thanks Ryan! I don't even need to read all the 17 pages to know we are probably all on the same track. 120,000 members, how many magazines are sold per month? I sometimes find a several month old Hot Rod or Street Rodder laying around I forgot to thumb through that one time before giving it away or tossing it. The Rodder's Journal is quality, however. ALL collector's editions.

I'll send you a copy if you want to check it out.

Keep in mind though that's it's just a little newsletter...one with 220 full-color LARGE format pages, stories submitted by HAMBers, photos by HAMBers, illustrations by HAMBers, tech articles, shop tours and more.

In the old days it might have been nessicery to pay attention to what the folks that print the paper mags think, and i happen to remember being reminded of hamb seeing them mentioned in '02 or 03 street rod or r+c during a period when i wasnt a regular.

Anymore this is bigger than most mags, I dunno about in sales and subscriptions, but many of there sales and subs are to people that dont really 'get it' and only have the subscription because some girlscout tricked them into it years ago. People here are more the serious builders, sellers and all around kats in the know.

This website has a lot of sway and i think it goes in a positive direction too. I know not everyone agrees with the direction of it, but at the same time it is a good part driven by the people and content does change accordingly. Meaning if you dont like the content then write better!!!

I havent seen a single annoying advertisement here and the few advertisers even more importantly proved they care about my buisiness by joining the alliance and supported this place, but in a mag they are 50% crap that i dont care about and that isnt relevent to anythink i like

In my opinion this is not only the best website, but in general the best publication for hot rods in general, followed my rod and kulture, then rodders journal(its not that i dont love rodders journal, i just cant afford the price). Also kirk, no offense, but i dont like the direction GG's are trying to go, they are too advertiser driven, and too busy funneling money to god knows where. Keep up the good work, Ryan, everyone else on the crew, AND everyone else that adds good content

It's really kind of silly. The constructive input (positive or negative) is great. The uninformed, "yeah, me too's" are just sad.

  21. first off, they need to have a thicker skin...this is the internet were everyone person has an opinion, good or bad.
2nd- "they" DIDN'T create this hot rod world they DID help it along by reporting on it. that statement they made takes away from the REAL innovators who started it all, in thier garages and backyards.
3rd- the big magazines only publish what is popular at the time, it's just so happens the "retro" thing is going on now but it too will pass. the HAMB really focuses only on a few eras.
4th- if they really need a scapegoat for their declining sales, then fine let it be us. i can see the headlines now " the HAMB killed the high dollar street rods"..........i say so be it!.

Janet... is part of destroying the fabric of hot rodding - is having the drudgery of photoshopping out the HAMB Alliance tags off the firewalls in your mag?

Nuts to their jealousy Ryan, you are running a top-notch site and I am glad to say I can learn more spending 5 minutes on here than I ever have from any of the rags I buy (on a regular basis I may add) off the news stands. Thanks for giving us a place to talk with friends who share the same passion for ho rods and customs.

Ruining Hot Rodding? Is that part of the plan to take over the world as well??

Sounds like that nasty jealousy thing speaking to me, you built something with such a strong following that we are happy to fight for the H.A.M.B and the J.J, name a mag with that following??

    You cant.

    Doc.

OOOH! Can I be an asshole too? Im good at it.

    A little off topic, but...

The HAMB is the best magazine out there. The alliance membership is worth having for A TON of reasons, but mostly because I consider it the most worthwhile subscription of all.

Sure, you don't have to be an alliance member to enjoy the HAMB, but currently being wheelchair bound I spend a majority of my time perusing, and the continuation of the Jalopy Journal is in my best interest, and hot rodding's in general.

Do I have a subscription to one of the three mags Janet mentioned? Yes, ROD & CUSTOM. Do I feel like renewing it now? Not sure...
