  1. This is a CARTER STYLE WINDSCREEN that I have designed patterned and am now in Production of.

I also designed made a 3mm wire buck for and then Hand made an Alley roof to suit my 32 Ford Roadster, with one of my screens on.

    http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc214/32OLDSTER/MY HOT ROD PHOTOS/

This is a link to the build of my car and the new alley roof.

Question,I am in the final stages of building my car and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on how to fix,or attatch the New Ally Roof to the top of my CARTER STYLE V-SCREEN.

I have already made the Alley skin to the shape I am happy with, just the locking down of like the convertable top(hard Top) to the top of the screen in a neat strong way.
Also when the roof is off I would like the windscreen to have a good look with no bulky catches etc.

Any ideas guys it would help in the fine tunning.

Looks like a Duvall style windscreen made by Tony Carter

  3. Not when you know all the diferences ,mine was first made out of wood prior to the first castings.

(1)Mine sits back on the cowl in the original flat windscreen staunchin position, making it wider than a Duvall.

    (2) Mine is cast all in one piece not pieces cast then welded together.

    (3) It doesnt lay back on such a steep angle. It has a lesser V not making it creep down the cowl front to much.

(4)It isn't as pinched in the top corners.

    (5) The screen is wider with the posts sitting back further now ontop of the cowl more making the screen wider. So the roof fits on over the doors so you dont get the Old Vintage car thing,,,when it rains the water runs off the top of the roof onto your leg.LOL. you know what I mean.

    (6) Mine has a half checked joint in the middle post for the top to be removed for fitting of your standard 6.76mm Laminated glass.

    (7) I individually hand draw file and edge match and love to death every screen I make to the best of my ability.

(8)Bolting down of the screen is done by 4 x M 10 x 25 Bolts. One in each outer post and two in the centre post.

I hope this clears that one up for you.

Yes it is a V-screen,not a copy. When you see them both together you can see the dramatic improvements I have made.

    Tony Carter.

  6. Thanks for the compliment,Brockenspoke.

Also thanks for the photos Philli, how does the screen locate and fasten down with the catches to the top of the screen.

What a great looking car,Philly roof is excellent I know how long that takes to do.Very nice.

My cars roof has a peeked brow, the roof comes over past the top of the screen by 45mm.

Also thanks for the compliment Stripper, yes my screens have been mistaken for a Duvall.

I have no doubt that your work is high quality. It certainly looks like a nice windscreen. My comment was more about claiming that "style" of windscreen as your own. Sure, you have improved on the original design but I would argue that improving or upgrading an existing design does not change the style of the item.

It's all semantics really. I am making a point for the sake of making a point. I was having a bad night at work when I saw your post and commented. Nice work...and your price seems good too.

You figured out how to design/cast/fit/mount it but you cant figure out how to attach the roof? It seems like that would be the easy part.

Tony , the top just sits flush on the windshield frame, and attatches with 3 1/4-20 BHS screws into holes in the frame that we tapped. One on each side , and one in the center.Hope that was helpful .

  12. Thanks for the incouragement and constructive critisism.I like your Style Muttly.Yeah I can do it ive got heaps of good Ideas on it.

Why re-invent the wheel when, you can talk to people who have done it.I just thought I would throw some ideas around with Hot Rodders, call it bench racing, brain storming.

I was trying to get away from the old wing nuts or thumb screws,Old Ideas thinking of something new.

I made this little Hook to catch out of 316 stainless. The back of the roof I am going to Aviation rivet to the ally inner frame to the back of the roof and it will locate and strengthen the back of the roof.

The roof goes back ontop of the body like the shape of a 39 Long back Coupe, with a large return sweep on the back,(some people call it a ducks tail).

The edges of the roof are still long and are there ready to have a wired edge all the way around yet to be done.

Ive got to get the header rail sorted and the catches so I can fit the skin to the already mounted frames then just Solid rivet the frames to the Outer Skin.I will use Avdells,or panel clips to do the location then countersunk Aviation rivets.I think this will look very old timey, way cool.

I shaped up an Inner Roof Rail to sit ontop of the screen top with a slim spungy rubber to sit inbetween.

  13. The reason I cant do that way Philly is because I have a Peeked brow on mine. The roof protrudes over the front of the screen at the same height as the top of the inside frame of the the windscreen,so as to not lose any more viewing room.

Hers a shot from the side.I like the brow its like a sun visor on the roof.Giving it a different look again on a V-style screen.

  14. A nice bit of work. I hope you do well with it.

  15. Philly love the way you have extended the front of your Windscreen through onto the bonnet mould.Nice touch,a very detailed car I'm sure.

Is that a Brookville body or a mint original.

Thanks Bib Overalls,I am already doing well with it.This week I am putting together a 36 Ford Roadster screen and a 34 Chev screen for the same Customer in New South Wales.

Malcolm Oastler has his 34 Ford Roadster,in Australian Street rodding this month with one of my Carter Style Windscreens on it.

This is Tony Cro's Show Winning 32 Roadster with one of my first Carter Style Screens on it.
Thanks Tony for choosing my screen to dress up your car.

Now that is some fine design work, thanx for sharing this custom manufacturing beauty with us, very impressive. We just call'em windshields, but windscreen sounds so much more classy. Big congrats on your genious work. ~Sololobo~

  19. Looks like an ad for some custom made parts in Austrailia.

    Nice looking windshield though.

  20. Yep Langy I am open to that,I can send the Windscreens to the UK.Postage may kill it a bit though.

They are only about 8 kg the 32 Screens can fit in a Push bike box 1200 long X 450 wide.

This is the way I have sent them all over Australia. With heaps of bubble wrap and cardbourd to save the corners of the screen.

Thanks Sololobo and 1935 Ron and Langy for the good reports, yeah I put everything I had into the shaping of this screen,I love the way it came out.

Gee I had to have one on my car thats why I did it.I couldn't afford a Duvall they were to dear for me at the time.
The whole Hot Rod adventure has bean a bit dear.I am the sole income for the family so its been a battle but my passion has stood the times.
Had little lapses at times due to funds or enthusiasm, but I'm back onto it again.Keen to get my car going.

Any clues to the type of catches to be used for the Header bow,to the windscreen top.?:)

  24. Thanks Rodster, yeah them Draw latches look like they will do the job.I'll look into them.

Thanks for the kind remarks.Im happy with the shape.

The kids laughed at me when I started shaping up a branch that I found in the back yard that fell out of the tree next to me and it looked like a Hot Rod windscreen post.Where the staunchin fits the cowl.

It never made it into the pattern but it gave me the first thought.Similar thing happened when I was going to make some of my own headlight posts.

I was cleaning up the back yard getting rid of the palm frongs then I saw it.The next part of the car.The shape of the palm Frong back.Well if nature had made that shape hold up sticking out 10 feet holding up a branch then it must be strong enough to hold up a headlight, lol. So ijust wipped up a mould for that too.

Makes me happy makin cool stuff for my Hot Rod.

It stands 150mm high from the chassis to the headlight mounting top.

    Neat headlights mounts Tony

  26. I like the headlight mount. Has a bit of substance to it. Did you drill it for a wire passage?

  27. Yeah I did drill it for the wires to run through took about an hour.I had to drill an 8mm hole up from the bottom and then down from the top.I didn't have a long series drill bit.

When I got to the middle both the holes lined up.I drilled a clearance hole in the top of the chassis for the Headlight wiring to go through down inside and run along up to the cowl bottom this will hide the wires for a while.

I talked to my foundry man and I can make them hollow but that is another mould to make.

Ive seen the wire hiden in a piece of bundy line.Or copper pipe then fixed to the back side of the Palm Headlight Post. That looks pretty cool too.

  28. Heres the first 34 Chev screen I made for Cyril Johnson.I had to cut up two good screens to make the pattern for this one hope you love it Cyril.

I made it fit so it sits just behind the swage on the cowl and flows that line straight down off the screen post onto the cowl swage works well it look like it is ment to be there.

  29. Thanks Rodster I now have some of them Draw catches,I will have to make them work.
