Got back into drag racing after 45 years! I glomed onto my son's abandoned 88 ranger with a locked up 5 speed.I put a 351C into our 51 F2,so the flat motor needed a new home. I stripped the ranger to the bone, put in a straight axle kit from speedway, adapted the ranger spindles & disks to the straight axle & put lincoln rotors with chevelle calipers on the rear. I also found a posi for the 7.75 rear with 3.73 ratio. I replaced all glass with lexan & removed all door workings.I chopped the housing off the 5 speed[after fixing it] & mated it to the flat motor[quite a trick] I had a pr. Of 16"'x 3 1/2" 41 ford rims laying around,so I got a pr. of bike tires from Whitney & slapped them on the front[looks sweet] got a couple of 15x10 rims from wheelsmith that fit perfect.rear tires are 275 60 R 15 BFG drag radials custom ordered from Costco! Ah,the motor,my master piece.I got a 304" scat kit, ported the block 'till i could smell water, built my own electronic distributor out of a 289 unit, cam is a 400 jr. Opening stock polished & lightened valves.I had a 4 pot manifold from back in the day,so I fabricated an 8" hi rise that holds 2 '78 lincoln 2bbl. Carbs. I adapted a 409 water pump to replace stock pump/mounts. I'm running stock heads,my ratio cc's to 8.25,& they breathe! I run at Irwindale 1/8 mile. Well, the first 3 times out were "one run & done"& back on the trailer! With the bugs out,& the addition of a line lock & a shift lite it's starting to run prety desent[for a 58 year old motor] best time to date 72.91 9.56. My goal is to get into the 8's,[8.99 would be amazing] ......................................flathead ranger

The moderators may throw this outta here since the year of the truck is just a tad outside the desired range for this board. Stuffing a straight axle and a flathead in it is stupid cool though.

    Need pictures!!!

pete: thanks for asking. i had an evans four pot from back in the day,so i machined aluminum adaptors to fit the manifold, then welded 8 1 5/8"x7" aluminum tubing to the adaptors. i machined 2ea 4 hole plates and welded them to the tubing. to that i bolted 2ea 2bbl to 4bbl adaptors.on top sits 2 '78 lincoln 430" 2bbl carbs.the only thing i did to the carbs,i removed the power valves & increased the jet size 4 sizes, works great.........................flathead ranger.

I don't think its a waste, just a cheap platform to get it all dialed in! Get it all figured out, and swap it onto a older car. Its not like he has ruined it and can not put it in another car. If it was mine I would run it like this, get a hot rod project and then swap a hotter motor into the ranger and keep racing it!

Yeah. I don't think it's there just to dial in.

  23. im with low n slo.

he never mentioned anything about 'just to dial in'
and id care about finding my car first, not the motor.

The 351 in a 51 f-2 and the flathead in an 88 ranger? Seems pretty backwards and unique, but hey Im not one to judge. Welcome aboard
