I've got some Cargar SS wheels I bought at a swap meet. The fronts are 15x6 with gold centers and chrome rims, the rears are 15x10 all chrome. Both say made in Mexico. Are these real Cragars or just a look-a-like? I am wondering because I bought 2 new Cragars recently and they are made in USA. Tex-T

Yes, they made gold center ones. Don't know where they were made. I think they even made some black center ones.
The Cragar SS wheels are all "Hecho en Mexico" and have been since at least sometime in the 1960's. Why would you have thought that because the wheels you bought were made in Mexico, that they somehow might not have been "real" Cragars though??? Cragar's, just because they're a longstanding "name" wheel manufacturer -is no different than most other corporations today - making super-profits by manufacturing in low wage sweatshops in third world counties and then selling the product at "North American" prices here.- to the detriment of working people in both places Mart3406 =====================================
yeah no shit,mine were on my 56 since the 70s and say made in the USA........never saw gold or black centersbut sounds like a 80s kinda thing
they made them with gold centers. It was a late 70's early 80's thing. Snap-On tool guy here in Indy had a full set of deep dish gold plate centered Cragars on his black '71 Chevelle SS. Everyone thought that car was just the shits back then. How time and taste changes sometimes

I have NOS Cragars stamped 1978 and they have stamped made in USA on them. I have some NOS Cragars in the 1980's and they are made in Mexico.

I believe the magazine ads had a blond with semi transparent black nightie type thing on with the gold center wheel on a black camaro in the back ground. I can see the girl clear as day but think the rest is correct too...lol
I had a set of gold Cragar Street Tricks. The gold was just a plastic coating that came off easily with a razor blade. I found this pic on the net ....

Honesty is sometimes offensive, but it is still honesty. At least mexican made is still American made, just not USA made. Yea they are most likely Cragers. Look for some other marking on them like Crager. I do remember seeing gold center Cragers but I don't remember new ones so telling you when they were made is going to be impossible for me.
I had a set of the gold ones on a 54 chevy in 1986 was my first car I thought they were a good looking wheel then. Now not so much.... I hjave a couple sets of the regular SS wheels now. They are a great looking wheel I think
I wonder what they would look like with a set of redlines mounted on them......... Probably not a good idea huh???....
I think some of those gold cragars were even sold two to a can,they were shipped in a specially painted steel can. There are some pics of them somewhere here on the HAMB.
You may well be right,I just seem to remember something about gold wheels in a can. I sure someone on here will know.
I know for a fact that Hurst had gold wheels. They used them on a '65 Hurst GTO giveaway car promotion and a '67 Grand Prix Convertible "Miss Golden Shifter" car.
