Something a lot of people might not know
or notice, is the lawn mower the kid is using
in this pic is a REO...made during the 1950's
by Reo Motors, the same 'Reo Motors' that
manufactured cars from 1905 until 1936 and
trucks until 1975. The Reo lawn mower
engines were somewhat unique in that they
    were a 4-stroke flathead design - common
enough - but they only had a single lobe on
the camshaft that operated both the intake
and exhaust valve. (Talk about 'symmetrical
valve timing' and no overlap!) If I
remember correctly, the single lobe operated
the intake valve directly off the top side of the
cam and the exhaust valve, via a rocker
mechanism operating off the bottom side of
the cam. Also, most (or all??) of these engines
came with a 2 to 1 reduction as standard, with
the engine's 'power output shaft' actually being
    the camshaft itself.

A pic too cool not to repeat here! This is from a new thread,
"Pictures of Hudson dragracers ... let's see 'em." And the skirts
on the pickup blow me away!

Used a REO motor from what appears to be that exact REO lawnmower on my first go cart. Home made frame. belt drive and a fluid drive clutch from a washing machine.

I believe it was 2 1/4 HP Probably made all of 20 mph. but it was enough to get my gear head juices flowing. REO lawn care products line was sold to Wheel horse.

RE: Post 14049, Funny thing, anyone letting their kid use a mower today would have C.P.S. all over them in hours. Just saying times sure have changed.

Here is my go cart that my dad and I build around 1962....I am standing and my brother is behind the wheel.....I think it must have been on Easter Sunday.

It has a small Briggs & Stratton with a gear reduction plus forward and reverse. This all came from a lawn mower along with it's base and wheels.... I ran the wheels off of it... Sure was UGLY but you have to start somewhere..... the steering wheel came off a 57 Chevy that was junked out in the woods a couple of miles way.....

Tee, yes, maybe not the prettiest, but by gum YOU had wheels! I LOVE the look of DETERMINATION on your face and that of your pit-crew brother! Great story AND pic. WHAT I'd have given at that time to have a real Go-Kart!!! Whoa!
