I want to go old School with the Air Cleaner on my 56 Wagon, but I am not sure how to go. I love the Caddy Style with the scoops on the sides, but they are spendy. I was just curious what you guys are running. Post some Pics, I Need Idea's!!! Thanks!
That is Sweet!!! I was just informed that the Caddy will not fit my 56 without cutting it first.... Wiper Motor.
I picked up a Cad one about ten years ago, Powder coated it and had it pinstriped. It looked so rad, then I shut the hood................. It could have been a crappy mr. gasket one and looked the same with the hood over it.
I said go with the Caddy because it seems to be what you want but.... If it were mine, I'd go with a plain stock air cleaner. They just look "right". When someone says "air cleaner" a '56 or '57 is what I think of. Some parts don't have to be more than they are. Bolt one on & go. http://www.55classicchevy.com/1955-chevrolet-tech-air-cleaners.html
I like those real well myself but today they are also spendy. Used to see them on a lot of hot rods when I was young.
A friend of mine took a cheap aftermarket chrome air cleaner assembly (the kind you can find at any swap meet for about $20.00) threw away the top and used a brass cymbal from a drum set. Very kool and different!
If you have some fab skills, find two old air cleaners with matching snorkels, remove the snorkels and mount both of the snorkels onto the housing your gonna run. Old and you did it yourself. Done right, shouldn't be a problem with the traditional police.
You won't probably find one of these anywhere but this one if from a Denvers Screw Compressor. I like it real well personally and it is now on its second car. Maybe a little too utilitarian for a traditional rod or rodder.
How about a picture of the motor it'll be going on? That-a-way we can submit ideas for your consideration.
I had the same clearence problem so I made it set forward by suing a flat steel plate base and off set stud setup moved it forward about 3 inches, just used the top piece
Make a homemade Ram-Air air cleaner for it with 2 pieces of ductwork that bolt under your front bumper... Kinda like an Olds 4-4-2. Should add a few ponies to your motor.....
I was planning on using a caddy air cleaner on my '55 when I do the engine swap. Does it not clear even if you only use the top as a cover?
Its stailness steel and the only reason I used it was because I could fit a 4" cleaner I it, that and it is a real air cleaner. Actually aluminum post and bowls were popular a few year back. Every time I look at it I think of that. For my 2x4 setup I am going to make a base then I have a pair of early '60s GM snorkel air cleaners that I am coing to cut so that the match up in the middle and weld them together. No snorkels they will draw from the bottom. Not absolutely sure it will work yet but I think it will. Someone mentioned taking 2 snorkel air cleaners and making a dual snorkel air cleaner. There were several GM cars that actually had a 2 snorkel air cleaners on them in the '60s. An Olds 442 I think was one of them. Anyway I seem to see at least one every time I go to a swap meet. They usually are not too expensive. I never get around to purchasing one they seem a little muscle caresc. to me. But I guess that is a solution. I still think that for a custom single carb car the '57 carb cover is a good setup.
I think the lady at the home goods store is going to be watching you funny as you stand by the pots and pans and stainless salad bowls with your air filter and carb adapter among all the clueless christmas shoppers.
I like the cymbal's Idea, that is cool. When i bought the car it didn't have any air cleaner, so i have a cheap chorme one with a K&N filter. I will probably end up making something. Here are a couple pics. One is the day i bought it in July, and the other is a few Months after. Thanks for the imput guys!!!
Were they still using oil bath air cleaners in 56? My 52 Dodge had an oil bath cleaner on it when I got it. I didn't want to deal with the mess of the oil, so I bought a spare one off ebay. I found an air filter at the auto parts store that fit inside and modified the top so it would act as a lid. Still had a vintage look...but with a regular air filter inside. I'm not sure if something like this will fit on your carb...just throwing out an idea.
No, Dan that is a good idea!!! Thanks for adding it. I am not sure if i have the clearance though. On my Cameo and Panel, I have all kinds of room, but it is a little more limited on the Wagon.
