If anyone has been along Austin's Greenbelt, they've probably seen this dump truck abandoned along one of the trails. God knows how it got there, or how long it's been there, but for S-n-G's I want to play with it and see if that old dumper can fire up.

I need help identifying the year of the truck, what motor this is (have a head casting #), what carb it has, and where to find a new dizzy.

Pretty clean! I was worried that with the missing nuts on the valve cover that water would've seeped in and rusted the top end.

    What's left of the dizzy.
The choke was rusted shut, but got it freed up a bit and flooded the thing with liquid wrench to see if the throttle valve will loosen too.

The transmission might've failed, the shifter is stuck solid, while the PTO handles move and the clutch pedal moves too.

I'd say somewhere between '49 and '55..............don't know anything else about it.

The photos are a little too arty to be able to make a positive ID, but it looks like 1950-1952. You can do a google image search on IH pickups, they used the same cab and the front ends were similar in apearance.

That would be so crazy to fire that thing up and drive it out of there. Gotta keep us posted on this :)

Going down tomorrow with a breaker bar to see if the crank spins. Hopefully the cylinders didn't get water in there.

Do you guys think that the old 6v (i'm guessing) starter can take a 12v battery? I'm hoping double the voltage will help lol

There is a flat pad on the side of the block ahead of where the firing order is cast in. Clean that off and the first 4--5 letters/numbers will tell you what engine it is. My guess is a "BD" series engine 269-308. Personally I'd leave it sit 'cause it really ain't worth more than scrap running and driving. Now if you think you need a bit of a challenge go for it. And even if it is 6 volt 12 won't hurt the starter a bit.

Bit of a challenge, I've never revived a dead car before, not like this.

    1-5-3-6-2-4 on the firing order.

  12. If it's been sitting with no hood and no air cleaner, I wouldn't hold my breath on it turning over. The last engine I opened that had sat like that, the intake valve stems were so rotted one of the heads fell off into the cylinder.

why does it look like it is in a Park setting?

is it truely abandoned? or left to be seen?

Have you got the right to be screwing around with it?

Doubt it was left to be seen. There were a few cars around here sitting on public land that were abandoned long ago. Most of them are gone now since scrap prices went up. Heck I've even found abandoned farms out in the county forest. Nothing wrong with picking up some trash on public land :)

That is a mid-50s or newer if it is the R series. L-series went from 50-52 (L-series had a split rear window). The R series for the big trucks lasted into the early 60s at least, afaik. The R in the big trucks signalled a six-lung, the V signalled a bent 8.

If that is an R 180 or 190, it would have a Red Diamond, which went up to 501".

The carburetor is a spin-off of the Holley AA1 (94). It has a four bolt base and cast iron top (presumably to help support the super duty air cleaner). It has, as you may have guessed, a governor on it. GMC used this carb on their big six gas-burners as well.

What are you going to do with it when you get it running? It isn't yours. There is no title. There's no way you're going to drive it anywhere.

There are probably thousands of other people who have seen the truck there, just like you. There is a pathway leading to the driver's door. It was put there intentionally. Dont be the jackass that fucks it up.

    Leave it be.

Thats a path way around the truck, better wear a bullit proof vest, but then that wont help cause id bet they would use a rifle.
Also IF you can get it ,moving it will cost more than the things worth.

I have a '51 LC170 and it looks nothing like the front on this one. Of course this one is a lot larger that mine. Mine is only about a 3 yard dump. This one appears to be a 5 yard or so. Mine also sat for 9 years before I got it from a friend. When he got it, it had sat for 10 years. These cornbinders will surprise you. All I had to do was points, plugs, etc. Put a battery in it bleed the brakes and it ran like a top. It might be this one will be easier than you think. Good luck with it, they may be slow but they will get you there and back.

Are you kidding? The "arty" pics you took are what the thing was placed there for, for cry'n out loud. Find a better use for your time, unlike me, responding to goofy posts like this one...

  23. I can't tell you anything about it that wouldn;t be anything more than conjecture.

But I might consider taking on a new friend if I could have those seat frames and dash knobs.

    Ya wanna be friends? :D

  26. How long will it be before some self important tree hugger declares it an eyesore and demand it gets removed at tax payer's expense? Just sayin. Go for it if your passion dictates. You'll find out what locals think when new ignition parts start to appear. Cool pictures BTW.

I don't think it's "abandoned". Leave it alone.

Have fun, if you can get it running for cheap/free and have time to kill go for it. I def wouldn't take it from there, it looks like its assimilated itself into a permanent fixture of the landscape. I also doubt whatever ignition system it has left is any good either tho.

  29. Now THAT'S funny...:D

I can ID it...it's YARD ART...

That is a 1955-1965 RF series truck, do to the one piece rear window and larger door window openings it has, the earlier RF's had 2 rear windows and smaller door window openings.
