thats what I did when I had to make my off set center stud and went to NAPA and got a filter,a old cal custom bottom base fits perfect
Not necessarily so. You'll need to cut the bottom part off the upper part and then use a common 14" aftermarket air cleaner base to make this work with a modern carburetor like an Edelbrock or Holley. These bases are available with an offset which places the air cleaner off-center...to the front in your case...to allow clearance for other components. Here's an example from eBay, $10 bucks. You can find "bargain" Caddy/Olds air cleaners on eBay from time to time, especially those with pieces missing - you'll only need the top cover anyway. I'd encourage you to try. I've attached a photo of the Chevy engine in my '55 Buick which uses a setup like I've discribed, except that an offset base was not required in my case. I did, however, need a 1" riser to get the rear of the air cleaner to clear the HEI. Good luck! PS: This may not be the most up-to-date "look"...according to some of the more judgemental souls on here...but I sure like it.
....Caddy schmaddy...that is so 2009...... PorkNbeaner, I love your brain, man... Here's mine....ultra rare half Beehives....and priceless.....
The picture is a poor cel phone one of the first mock up, the final version will be about 3" lower than shown. The air cleaner that I have in progress is a early 50's oil bath, 16" in diameter and 5 " high, origin unknown, that has been gutted. The top has had the innards removed leaving a lip to cover the top edge of a paper element filter. The interior has been gutted and the bottom removed. The new bottom is the bottom part of the original 66 Riv air cleaner. That unit drops the filter base at least 2" below the top flange of the carb so when installed you will not be able to see the carb from the side. Will be using a filter that is 3 1/2" high inside. Because of the molded shape of the bottom of the Riv air cleaner all linkage and lines have clearance. Canuck
mine's and old edelbrock that i sanded down and painted flat black, then added the clay smith cams sticker..... leonard
I like it. I have been considering that style for my Galaxie, but I refuse to pay the price those are going for. I have been looking around on ebay for an original one I can use, but the prices are only going up.
I found this on Craigslist and got it for a good deal. It was only the top, but that was cool as I didn't need the Oil Bath part. In the process of making a custom bottom so I can use a K&N Filter. They are big!! ===I took my Drivers test in a Galaxie, 64. Always liked those!!!
If I hadn't found an original housing for my 62 I would have tracked one of theses down. I love my Galaxie. I have owned it since 1996 and I have had it apart for 3 years. One day it will be back together.
I was tossed up on what Air Cleaner I wanted, but leaned to these. It is taking a little work to get it to fit in my 56!!! My Mom sold her Galaxie when i was in my 20's ( A few long Years ago) One day I was walking through a wrecking yard and there it was!!!!! I got the radiator tank off of it and it is now on my Cameo!!!!!
I have a 41 Merc stainless steel hubcap on mine, I don't have a pic, but I just welded a tube across with a nut in the middle and you just screw it down till it stops. Kinda clean looking I think what with no stud out the top.
Heres the air cleaner I built for the buick engine I had in my roadster . Started out as 2 corvair air cleaners!!
No pinstripe, just more purple........ It's the original that came with the car, but was coming apart at the factory spot welds. So I opened it up, trashed the oil bath center and put a monster paper filter in it. The face is a chrome honeycomb light grille that I heated and fit in place. Works for me............
