"Shocked" is one of those words that get worn out beyond meaning in the news media and pop culture. But back in early May 1970, I was glad to be sitting down when a friend stated tersely that Inger Stevens was dead, and a suicide at that!

In my teens, she'd been the girl-next-door type in TV's "The Farmer's Daughter" with William Windom during its long run from '63 through '66, and I appreciated her acting depth after seeing her poignant portrayal of a gang-rape victim in "Hang 'em High" with Clint Eastwood in '68. RE her private life, she'd flown below the radar without appearing the lurid tabloids. So, I guess if I thought about her at all, it was just to assume that she was as happy as she was successful. Her hard work had, after all, brought her ALL the trappings of both happiness and success.

But, like tragic Lupe Velez decades before, her private life was like a ship adrift amid gale winds and treacherous undercurrents -- and headed straight for some rocky coast. When I heard she was dead at 35, at first I couldn't accept it. As when Elvis died, I felt the way you do when you lose a friend.

Yes, we have her image and voice on the screen as mementoes. But every time I see her, the experience is tinged by a deep sorrow for a life cut short -- and the never-to-be-answered question of what great work may have lain ahead of a fine actress.

This thread shows that others share the sense of loss.

Better days. With co-star William Windom

The smiles in this "Hang 'em High" publicity shot belie
the two tortured characters played by Stevens and Eastwood.

Uncanny, isn't it? They could practically be sisters.
