anybody have any idea what tranny bell housing will bolt to a 56 322 nailhead besides dynaflow?.think i may have posted in the wrong place, earlier post seems to have been deleted.
The nailhead used the 400sp and 400st turbos from 1964 to 1966. They were strictly Buick bolt pattern. With a torque plate and a crank busing from one of these, they should be able to fit your 322. I believe you also had to use the starter of the same years. Correct me if I'm wrong but I also think yours came from a closed driveline car. Good time to change to a good rear end also.
I think you are limited to Dino-flows and the 54-56 Buick manual trans bells. But I could be wrong. Are you wanting to run a stick?
It's still active but you should post a little about yourself before posting. Just a heads up. Go here; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18
the car is rusted beyond repair, gonna stick it in a 49 f1,yes closed drive line, manual trans ok .i guess only option is to buy 600$ adapter plate. the little motor runs good, seems a shame to let it sit in the shop for lack of tranny.
Offenhauser makes a bellhousing that will bolt to your Nailhead Part # 0310 You then can bolt your Ford Tranny to it 1949-64 Check out "Exeter Auto Supply" they have Offy parts and catalogue I have the 0310 behind my 56 322" and it works well.
If you want to bolt it to the stock F1 three speed, there are several old aftermarket adapters still floating around that would accomplish that. You'd still have to find a standard shift flywheel for a Buick 322, though.
I see the early Nail bellhousings on Ebay all the time................................ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buic...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e43b454f There's an Offy, Buick to early Ford on there now.
322 Nailheads had a larger bell pattern than the 364/401/425's do. The 400sp and st transmissions will NOT directly bolt to the 322's for that reason. Bendsten and Wilcap make 322/264 adapters to convert to th350/th400s, but are expensive.
Keep watching the online places for old stuff. Hamb classifieds, CL, EBay, etc Here is one I think is trans-dapt. It is 53/56 Buick to Chevy stick trans. Came from online for $50 because it was not ID'ed. Was sold a couple years back.
