How did you prep the nails? I wonder if the tarnishing is coming from the nail side or the clear? what primer are you using?
I am not a pro painter so that could be the issue... I sanded the nails, clean them with lacquer thinner and used rattle can primer(enamel based) let it cure for 1 day, shoot a single stage white basecoat,(2 coats) let it cure for 2 days, silvered the piece, blow dried it with a hair blow drier, after 3 hours shoot the clear coats.... now the only difference was on the lacquers(lacquer base coat) as lacquers interact with the enamel base coat even if the piece it silvered..... as I said before I am no pro painter, I need help here too... could you guys help me out.. how would you prep a simple piece like a nail...
I think you can get an epoxy primer in a rattle can, that stuff is very good at sealing, use it as a sealer right before your first base coat, allow it to flash off and then the base...
Sadly not in nicaragua , but I do have a paasche air bursh... when I get a good camara I will be posting my results...
check Alsa's words: "WORKS GREAT AS A MIRROR REPAIR KIT" well its because its the same silver nitrate... But they got their Paint System.. that's what we need to work out ourselves...
Have somebody checked out the powder chrome paint from Eastwood? How illuminated are that, against real chrome??????
Most people think Chrome its the standard of wich all reflective surfaces have to be measure, the reality is that Silver its more reflective than chrome and aluminum, that's why its used in solar energy farms... I have not tried chrome powder coat..
I have been thinking about this thread and all the effort that nicamarvin and others having been putting into this and sharing. I was thinking about the diamond clear gelcoat used during metalflake jobs that were popular on 70s boats. It seems to hold up pretty good to the sun, and is able to maintain the shine of the flake without yellowing. I did a bit of research, and if you google a product called mg-1615 clear gelcoat it looks promising. Not sure if you've tried any epoxy or polyester clear resins yet in the search for a uv stable clear over the silver nitrate.
Thanks buddy, I will surely take a good look at it, but most problems we are encountering are delamination and lack of rust inhibitors of most automotive clear coats, as they are design to go over a already prep surface and not on polished shiny metals be it silver or bare metal...the most logical way for me to go now its to use 2 kinds of clear coats after the perfect mirror its created first a dedicated industrial rust inhibitor clear coat or in my case since I don't have access to this here in nicaragua I will be trying a water based acrylic sealer(transparent) that will stick to the silver, and after a 1 day of curing a automotive type clear coat that will stick to the sealer and provide UV and superior durability... right now I am testing my iron nails with automotive type coatings and the water base sealer in this test I will test the Clear coats ability to seal 600 grit sanded iron nails(no silver, just good old iron) right now I am testing 1-Mega ultra 5000 ultra high solid 2k Clearcoat( http://www.grupokativo.com/TDS/156.pdf ) (High quality Local brand) 2- sherwin williams ultra 7000 clear basecoat 2k 3- Mega Mixing or filler clear base coat 4- Water Based Acrylic Clear sealer 5- Mega 5000 Clear coat over all of the above... wish me luck, last time I tested the Mega clear on a piece of metal lasted 2 weeks under water...
enamal and laquer do not work under urethane clear. try an adhesion promotor befor clear after silvering.
You say you use Spectra Chrome, and claim to have done the panel shown in this thread. That truck was done using Cosmichrome, not Spectra Chrome
I was not the man behind the trigger when that panel was sprayed, Ron Burnet was. He is the man that trained me how to use the chrome. The main body of the panel was sprayed at one time, and all of the different body panels where done separate.
I've been quickly looking through this thread on spray chrome and feel the need to say that not all spray chrome chemistry is the same. I've spent a lot of time and money learning this the hard way. In order to do this work, a large equipment investment is required. Don't try it if it come in a spray can. This type of system can produce a very good job and has its place in customizing, restoration or in the art world. I've done everything from plumbing fixtures to fiberglass parts for a go cart. I I would be glad to answer questions or to talk about projects. I have a web site- bulldogcustomchrome.com
That panel truck was done with Cosmichrome. To see what happens to Spectra Chrome in as little as 24 hours when they themselves spray it visit the Gold Touch Web site and take a look at the Honda Civic Spectra Chrome ruined with their product. Then they wouldn't fix it without charging more money. http://www.goldtouchinc.com/cosmichrome/gallery/mess.html
here we go again... you also believe that in order to make this in your own you will need to buy the rights to their so called Patent pending formulas...
Never make the mistake of telling me what I'm thinking! FYI- I don't have time to play chemist. I have to work for a living.
I got a couple samples from Spectra today, it is winter here and harsh so I think im going to leave it outside in direct sunlight and massive temp changes to see how it reacts, I will get some before and after time frame pics.
yet you tell people what you think?.. " " so you need to tell lies to people? telling them they need large sum of money to have a small set up? and since most don't have the money you offer them your services? sir you answered your own statement later on.. a chemist you certainly are Not...if not you would know there is Not a single trace of chrome on that overhyped tollen's Reagent chemistry, the only possible X or Variable on that formula its the Reducing agent, be it Hydrazine or Formaldehyde they are all Aldehydes all need it to reduce DIAMMINESILVER (check the links for the so called Spray On Chrome patented Chemicals) The electron-half-equation for the reduction of of the diamminesilver ions to silver is: Please feel free to disagree Lies... Guys don't let guys like Bulldog put you down....
nicamarvin No lies have come out of me here. I said don't tell me what I'm thinking, so you quote something I say? That would be me telling you what I think. No one is making claims that this is real chrome. Do you think people who buy a paint with chrome on the label think they're getting the same as dipped chrome? This is a system that can give the look of chrome, if you know what you're doing. It's not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of practice, and a lot of work. You have a lot of opinions, and that's great. Insulting others when they state their opinions (especially when they know what they're talking about) is truly unnecessary. You are working on your own chemistry, telling people not to buy from the manufacturers, yet you insult me for telling people not to buy from a can. There are more reasons to deal with a manufacturer than just to get the chemistry. I'm running a business, not a hobby shop. Business connections are made through the industry in which you work. That includes your suppliers. I also admit to not being a chemist. Again you insult that statement. I work at putting out a good finished product and doing the best work I can. I focus on the craftsmanship end of the business, not the laboratory aspect. This is supposed to be a forum for discussion and for people to share their experience with others. I've simply tried to share what I've learned. The only correction I've made on here was to clarify who the supplier was on a project. Since then, that person and I have been in communication and talking shop on our own. Lastly, I didn't put anyone down. I wish you well in your experiments. I actually admire your curiosity and determination to figure this out for yourself. Enjoy your life.
Sorry dude I went off on ya..I must apology to you.. to tell you the truth I wish I could have a business like you.. that's a BIG Hell Yeah.... Thanks... now let me ask you, have you used a different Paint system beside the one provided by your providers?(basecoat/ClearCoat) now I beg of you, can you Chrome 2 very small pieces using the same silver formulas you buy but one using the paint system provided and the other using an automotive base system?...let them in the sun for 2 months and let us know what was the outcome....PLEASE...........
