The Irish Spring soap trick is not meant to eliminate, but to keep them from chewing on anything but the soap. Hence the bite marks.

Unless you can seal up your shop, garage, workplace, and remove all the little places they can hide (like car parts piles, shelving, ect.) they are going to keep coming back.

Just put in a couple of P3 Attack Wave electronic rodent repellent gizmos which I found on that thar noo fangled Netweb thingy;) - seems to work so far. They emit constantly changing ultra high frequency sounds which even the family dog cannot hear, but they attack the rodent's central nervous system and keep them the hell out.

The Irish used to hold ratting contests and bred Rat Terriers. They are much better at catching and killing mice and rats than cats. Even better yet, I'm told, are ferrets who will actually go in a wall and get a rat or mouse.

My thing is that I don't relish the idea of having an animal that has been mousing or ratting snuggling up in my lap or licking my face.

I'm also not a big fan of cat prints on my car hood and litter boxes stink.

I use a bucket trap. A little soap in the water makes 'em drown quicker and sink. I put bait on a floating jar lid just out of reach. They jump on the lid and it sinks.

I wonder if a 6 volt lantern battery would kill a mouse.

LOL,, if youve ever been around a rat terrier you will quickly come to understand that not much work is going to get done.

Throw the ball or I bark. bark. bark. bark. yip yip yip. bark bark bark. Hey watcha doin, mind if I climb in your lap and stay there? I wont be much problem, unless kissing your face is a problem. Now watcha doin, I gotta sniff it. Throw the ball,, bark bark bark. BARK BARK BARK. Whatya mean you dont have it,, where'd it go? Oh your gonna lay down on that creeper,, goodie! Now your at my level and since your holding something overhead its gonna be hard for you to defend your ears. I will lick your brain. Up your nose or in the ear either works for me. I'ma go take a 5 minute nap and I'll be charged up for a few more hours. Wait,, did you find my ball yet?

Also a rat left alone is more destructive than the rodent its supposed to kill.

Yeah,, I have a Rat Terrier, her names Shitflake. (turn up the sound!)

That being said, I love that dog even though shes a pain in the ass. I dont know how they got 200 pounds of personallity into a 15 pound dog but its there. She is also way too smart. Sometimes (most times) she's smarter than I am.

Cats can be left alone for days and they wont be nearly as destructive as the dog. Keep the food and water bowls full, clean the potty and pet them every so often. Cats are also much more patient about things, Hey I got a full belly and great reflexes, I'll just take a nap here, I know that mouse is under that cabinet and if he comes out he's mine. I can sleep right here for hours, days even.

When they are babies start playing with their feet while you love on them. This will get them used to claw clipping later. If they take offense "scruff" them, its as close to a scolding as you can get. Mine dont seem to care what I do with the feet as long as I rub the belly after a couple clips.
