Had to delete earlier post. I BLEW Nielsen's
    famous "Airplane?" line! (Alzheimer's again?)
Well, for the record, here it is, right!

I was sorry to learn that actor Leslie Nielsen
(recently profiled here) passed away Friday
evening from pneumonia complications in Fort
    Lauderdale.

Nielsen, 84, had actually enjoyed TWO long careers
-- one as a serious actor in the '50s through '70s,
thereafter in his new-found element: COMEDY.
Few entertainers can claim to have played such
diverse characters as Clarence Darrow and Police
Lieutenant Frank Drebbin! But Nielsen pulled it all
off . . . AND made it all look easy.

On the serious side, Nielsen was a member of
the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII, and as
a sort of international entertainment ambassador,
he was awarded The Order of Canada, one of
    Canada's highest honors.

But doubtless, few of us will forget one of the
screen's 100 most memorable movie lines! It was
the moment in "Airplane!" (1980) when a doubtful
officer queries, "Surely, you're joking!" And Nielsen
snaps back: "Yes, I'm sure! And DON'T call me Shirley!"

    Shirley, he will be missed.

How about some good ole' pictures from Connecticut?!

The Merrit Parkway- which was once one of the most beautiful stretches of road around. It is now still a 2 lanes on both sides and is strictly for cars only. It can be a petrifying drive for anyone because everyone on it is doing 80+mph and is always in a big hurry. It can be scary to drive at night and there is a serious lack of a breakdown lane. It is known for its fatal accidents. View attachment 1164781

The bridges are still there and they are beautiful peices of artwork but many of them are in need of a good cleaning and are covered in over-growth.

The Berlin Turnpike in Connecticut is a very cool drive also. it is still home to many old diners, bowling alleys, etc. It is still very well known as a Friday and Saturday night cruising location! Its home to some very old vintage/retro signs, an abandoned drive in. A hot spot on the weekend for classic cars and yes...illegal street racing

The new McDonald's on the turnpike is even built in very classic retro styling.

Another vote from the Peanut Gallery! Buick surely pulled out
all stops for Detroit's Golden Jubilee Parade, eh? Got to be one
of the best-conceived, best-executed floats I've ever had the
pleasure to lay eyes on! THANKS for posting the great series,
    BlueMoose!

Gary, the lack of side markers on the "last" , means it is a 1965-67... only a few I asked noticed that!

    The Gathering....
A noted Vair authority says, "Modern Classic Motorcars - 805 E. Nine Mile Dr. in Ferndale, Michigan? - Source Winter 1977 Corsa Quarterly.
Google maps says it is a 7-11 store there now!

CORSA Historian states, "The guy on the right in the photo is Al Brunke.
They were members of the Detroit Area Corvair Club at the time and ran a
Corvair repair business in Detroit and later Ferndale, MI. Their claim to
fame was cutting up two or three rusty junky MI Corvairs and welding the
pieces together to make one rusty junky complete car. Al moved to Denver,
CO and we haven't heard from him since.

This shot is a thrill for me. Really, you're looking at DeSoto's
last, great BLAZE OF GLORY. 1957 capped a three-year period
during which the marque posted a total of more than 350,000
cars, MOST of them Hemi equipped! The Exner-finned Fireflite
below is considered by many to epitomize the fin era, and the
'57 'vert is one of the most sought-after DeSotos ever.

But for '58, the Hemi was gone, sales fell by more than half,
Dodge and Chrysler were closing in on the DeS price bracket,
and quality-control issues helped sour loyal customers and put
DeSoto under water. All the DeSotos sold from '58 through '61
didn't match one year of 1955, 1956 or 1957 sales. In a perfect
world, it would have been great if DeSoto could simply have
ceased production after '57 and just started making Dodges and
Chryslers. That way, the proud make, around since 1929, could
have gone out on a high note!

Lloyd Center in Portland. When built in 1960, it was the largest shopping center in the country.
