Ehdbya, great pic of Ruckstell later in 1916. It appears that he was running the old bodywork still (albeit with a little change to the cowl area). His roll over at Sheepshead must not have been too bad. I had read somewhere he got the new bodywork late in 1916 but it must have been real late I guess.

As to the center pic Pullen ran this type 45 in March winning the George Washington Sweepstakes and Dave Lewis in another placed 4th. They also ran the 45s at Corona in April where Thomas ran second and Pullen third. Sad day though as that was the day Burman was killed. The 45s were pretty much all that they had in their arsenal that could win races but due to the size (450 ci or thereabouts) they were only allowed in the West Coast events. They were itching to get the OHC cars on the track but they had to work out the bugs.-Jim

T this is Achille Varzi in a P3 at the 1934 51 km Parma-Poggio di Berceto, scuderia Ferrari team mate Ferdinando Barbieri took the honors in a Monza.

Perhaps he's telling Enzo he needs more tire here...

Willy, What Fairground in Massachusetts around 1908 would have held races? My dentist has a photo of the cars in the parking lot, HUNDERES of cars all high end stuff, we've always wonderes were the photo was taken. It's about 2 1/2 feet long, I'll look around for some digital photos I took of sections.

I know little about is but I do recall that Gerhard von Raffay drove a red one at the 1986 VCCNZ Pan Pacific Rally in Christchurch in 1986.

Hans Etzrodt gives a fine summary into the history of the Sascha racing cars here http://forums.autosport.com/lofiversion/index.php/t29084.html accompanied by a couple of intelligent comments from someone with a familiar sounding name. Could it be the same person who occasionally posts here or are there two of them. Hmmm.

I've included a photo i posted near the beginning of this thread.

Guilty as charged. I was already using Vitesse as a nick when I discovered what was then Atlas, but some Finnish bloke had beaten me to the name there!

I do know some about the Sturbridge Fairgrounds racing. Contact me.

I put together an article about what I found.

I would love to collaborate. Anyone else that can contribute is welcome too.

i am interested in tracks around Charlton, Massachusetts between 1921 and 1923 (i.e. Oxford Fairgrounds, ect.)

For more information, see article in link below. It includes photographs.

Search this thread for a few more photos. Use "sturbridge" as your keyword.

Ehdubya the pics above are from the Chicago War Derby in JUne of 1917 but that is not Schillo's Mercer. The #6 Mercer is Joe Thomas. That is the cars moving off the pole position and Thomas started 4th on the ouside of the front row. DePalma in the 299 was on the pole with Joe Boyer besides him in a Frontenac, then of course Oldfield in the Sub. Schillo's Mercer (#32) should be right behind Boyer. Great pics-Jim

Yes Jim, I think Schillo is partially visible left of DePalma in the first pic and to the right in the lower one. Do you know if this is the 'baby' Mercer as the press referred to it that Nikrent was to drive in the 1915 Vanderbilt and the car Pullen failed to qualify at Indy 1914?
I had another look at the Schillo cockpit shot at the LOC and they're unsure of the location or date. Milton's car is very unusual left hand drive in 1915 isn't it?

I know that Readville (now part of hyde park) started auto racing in 1903. It was the Norfolk County fair. There are some references here in earlier posts.
the rest to me are still mysteries. I am particularly looking for Marshfield, MA which I know had auto and motorcycle racing then, but im coming up blank on concrete evidence:(
