well, do I buy a "new" hei from e-bay or swap meet.or rebuild one I have on the shelf? if I rebuild can U.S. made parts be found? I here mixed revues on the new ones avalable out there.anyone know of a decent brand or seller that stands by their product? Any help would be great.
Google Skip White Performance,He offers a lifetime warranty on the HEI's they run around $60 complete, I have had mine for 3 years and all is OK,almost all things today are offshore but HEI parts are everywhere so no big deal.
There are Cheap ones and there are decent ones. You get what you pay for. At the Street Rod Nationals last year there were vendors selling them for around $50.00. We sold a couple of ours to guys that had bought the fifty buck ones and they hadn't lasted the weekend! Look here for pricing on the PerTronix ones http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Distributors/?keyword=pertronix+hei
Is the one on your shelf broken? If I were going to buy a new one I would by a Mallory. But I like mallory stuff.
I would shy away from anything new and imported. Millions of good stories, thousands of horror stories. Ideal scenario of course you can send a good core to our good friend GMC Bubba, or if you wanna tackle it yourself, get some good internals from a company like MSD and build your own. The parts from MSD "might" also be imported, but at least you have a good old GM core to build from. BDM
Does the one on your shelf actually NEED a rebuild? I run factory (used) GM stuff. I keep a complete spare in the trunk of all three of my cars. Any issues on the road and I can swap in another in a matter of minutes. I have heard (read?) about issues with the aftermarket Chinese **** (actually you can insert this comment in any conversation regarding import garbage, not just pertaining to dist's)... it may not all be junk but I feel much better off ***uming it IS all junk. We have a "$45 Day" at the local wreckers a couple times a year ... great time to "stock up".
Good point, stock GM HEIs are a dime a dozen around here. If that's what you run just carry a spare. Swapping a dizzy isn't that big a deal unless you have serious clearance issues, like your dizzy is under the dash or something. Oh I ment to mention that if you go to a reputable parts store you can get bits for them aside from the store brand that is good stuff. Probably made in Mexico but its still American.
No way would I buy a $50 ChiCom distributor. It's bad enough their repop garbage doesn't fit. Buying something electronic is asking for trouble.
stock hei with msd parts, can`t go wrong, i have had good results with the summit hei, but i bet its chinese.........
My father and his buddy had bad luck with the cheap Mallory HEI's, modules going bad quick, and other internal problems leaving them stranded. I am running a Summit unit, and has worked like a champ, and is under $100.00.
