I'm not sure that this question can be answered by watchin the movie...most movie trivia questions can...
Has anyone read the book "American Graffiti"....I was amazed that the Milner 32 coupe that pulls into Mels Drive-In has a Hemi engine in it....Way it should have been!! Check it out...
Funny, I had this conversation with a biker friend of mine. In the end we both decided that he was a member of an engine cycle club, he doesn't like it to be called a gang either,ha,ha.....
Was a 427,but movie was set in 1962,and big blocks not invented yet so it wasnt seen. But car was seen in two lane blacktop and motor was seen, main difference of car in movies is slide windows in one and windup in the other.Hope this helps.
Heres a little trivia tidbit for yas,In 1974 i went on a cross country trip in my van, We stopped at universal studios for there tour & on one of the "prop" lots they had the coupe & the merc( i don't think the merc had windows in it) sitting there looking really bad! I took some pics by my "ex' decided that the trash man need them more then i did & she tossed them!! JIMV
If you watch the movie and pay attention to detail, you'll notice when the '55 rolls over it has a six cylinder single exhaust with skinny tires, painted silver wheels and dull looking black paint.
Also, the roll-over car has an automatic in it.....You can clearly see the pan when the car is on its top......The are already some good threads on here about the movie....and even more out there on the net.
I need to end this thing. The REAL answer is: car 1--a 7 cylinder blown Johnson bored to 454 and destroked to 427-small block. This one used a Henway first gen. transmission that weighed 10 lbs. The big problem was the prop, the single blade held down the torque, estimated to be 13 0z. Car 2---this one used a tunnel ram Evinrude with 13 two barrels. It was huge, the henway couldn't handle it, so they went with a "rock crusher" slush- o- matic from Tremec, 56 speeds and no epoxy! It went on to star in many movies, most notably the world famous "Debbie does Dallas". Alas, a sad ending to such a technological gem--Debbie tried to "mount" it during a burnout at the Texas Roundup and it was last seen passing the space shuttle. Word is, its in a barn in South Mars. Debbie married a Vulcan named Spock, but he was abusive with his ears and she left him to become the leader of the HAMB nation. Ain't America Great!!!!!!! cooger
I started reading this seriously 'til I got down to Debbie. I wish I had those wasted seconds of my life back.
When I watched the movie, I noticed one lugnut on the rear left tire, while spinning, wasn't NOS. The engine was built by Ernest Hemmingway's ghost and he told me in a dream, it's a stroked and ported merlin P-51 mustang motor from his mother's salmon colored Nash Rambler wagon.
Yup ! It was a Hemi V8 motor , er engine . Then it WOULD have been the fastest car in the valley ! The way I`d build it ! Chryco
Nice one dopey! A search would have provided the answer 10 times over, this subject keeps coming up thats what is annoying, its OK to ask questions just don't do it blindly.
Is it summer yet? I'm looking forward to the "dumbest thing said about my car" threads. If you have a garage or shop and can build something during the winter please do!!!
Very cool info on the 55, Ive always wondered what happened to the car. A buddy of mine saw the Milner coupe at Brizios shop a few yrs ago. What happened to the 58 Chev and the Merc from the movie? Graffiti and Two Lane Blacktop are hands down the 2 greatest movies ever made. Those of you evenrude enthusiest.....get a life.
two lane sucked fully except for the 55 the evinrude was actually a black and decker aquarium pump 1 bad assed aquarium pump at that
