That car has a great look. I like the teardrop, but I think I prefer the flat fx hood with the forward facing scoops on the front edge.

Roy- Are we seeing you this weekend at Mooneyes? Ernie roped me into running with the A/FX'ers and Dave. No doubt, due to my 'lack of speed but points for style' Comet, I may be a contender. For what I have no idea! I get the center section back in the next day or so, with the 4.71 gear set. The 5500 stall convertor from Ernie will have to wait 'till next week! What say you? I'm camping out Friday night, and we have extra pit passes!!!

Dale;NO,I will not be there.I'm surprised Dave let you in,he told my friend John that NO small blocks are allowed.John has a 64 Falcon,351W,4-speed runs 9s[6.20s at the dale],told him"small blocks have an unfair advantage"!!WTF?!!I guess his 600+" engine isn't enough to overcome a small block Ford!!! Good Luck! I may be at Irwindale this Thursday for some more clutch work.MM,March 18-20. ROY.

I am going to go late 60's street/strip with it. Not down to every nut and bolt, but I will try and maintain the look inside and out.
I have considered painting "Mercury" on some LQ4 valve covers.......

I agree. The vintage style of those wheels is the only thing keeping them from being completely wrong.

I've a question about the '64 A/FX Comets. Were the quarter windows fixed in place as on the Thunderbolts or did they crank up and down. I looked through my collection of old articles and saw one that had NO quarter window handles and another that did? Does anyone know what was correct? Thanks. Syl

    Hey Guys!
I've been on a break you could say but I've uncovered some good stuff.
Referencing back to page 87 about there being 2 1964 A/FX Chrisman Comets... Here is what Jim Barillaro's son - Jim told me after he had the chance to ask his dad about it...

"The story was that Mercury wanted Chrisman to drive the white 64' AFX car. Chrisman didn't want to drive the car because it was a gas job with a 4 speed and he couldn't because of his legs. I think he got hurt in one of the Howards twin bear dragsters and he told Mercury he couldn't shift the 4 speed. So Chrisman and Fran Hernandez contracted Shrewsberry to drive the white 64' AFX car. Chrisman was a dragster pilot so he built the 64 white car with the blown nitro wedge 427 with a direct drive unit so it was like driving a dragster. This was the begining of the Funny Car. The car was rebodied in 65 and the engine was moved back and it got the new for 65 427 SOHC. The 64 Afx car was basically just a regular AFXer that was sponsered by Sachs & Sons Lincoln Mercury and driven by Bill Shrewsberry. From what my dad said the 2 cars were a totally seperate deal from each other. The Nitro car didn't even have a class to race in and actually ran against some diggers in the early days. This was all about Mercury doing marketing and selling cars. The story about the AFX car going to the ford dealer in Ohio was the exact same story my dad understood. Hope this helps a little but YES there was 2 white 64 comets sponsered by Sachs & Sons Lincoln Mercury.
    Thanks, Jim "

    Ahhh.. closure... :)

Now its time to find this Comet!

I worked in Ford parts with a long time parts man who started out at Spence Ford. My friend used to sell George Weiler some of his parts. I don't work with him any more, or even Ford for that matter, but I miss his stories and all the old time bench racing we used to do while selling Ford parts.

    Syl,
The Collector and the AFX Comet don't get auctioned off until sometime in January, 2011. So you still have time to sell off some of your cool Mercury racing stuff if you are planning to buy!!! Here is a link to The Collector on Mecum's site.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your 1/4 window glass question, but someone here may know.

Here is a "back in the day" pic that probably has not been seen before. It is from the personal collection of Sylvanus Pierce. '66 Nationals. Not my pic.

Ken;great pictures! The dark colored 64 Cyclone in post #2129 appears to be a N/S,look at the passenger window and those 7" slicks, probably a 210HP,289,4 gear. ROY.
