over the past 35 yrs she has gone with me to junk yards and lots of swap meets--still does--she spots things that I sometimes overlook

  4. I took her to three different salvage yards before I found one that would take her. At $9 a hundred I ended up with 250 bucks!:D

Yes. She would be pissed if I didn't. She found two of my current projects too.

She appreciated presents like steering wheels, valve covers, air cleaners, lift kits, exhaust kits, etc.

The fender for her model A is sitting in the living room. :D

  15. Absolutely ... I was at a wreckers one time (alone) and found an '84 Z28 with a complete T5 still in it. This was after noon, so time was tight if I was to get it out that day. I raced home, loaded up the tools and grabbed the wife. I lay under the car, she tossed me the tools I requested, had it out in no time and it is now installed in my Olds coupe. She's a real trooper, comes from a family of old car people so I really lucked out.

She also came in handy at the "Barrie Flea Market" (our twice a year old car swapmeet/fleamarket). I saw a pair of unique valve covers that I liked ... guy wanted $90 (hmm, too much for what they were). I send the wife back to his table not 5 minutes after I was there. She asks about the covers ... buddy says "I'm asking $80 but I'll take $70 :D:). True story ... the "tits and tires will cost you money" ain't true in this case. The "tits" actually saved me $20. Yeah I bought 'em. Ended up selling them years later on eBay for something like $120.

When my wife's (girlfriend at the time) Honda got broken in to, she was like, "How the heck am I going to afford to fix all that broken dash stuff?" I said, "We're going to the junk yard!" She had never been and because it was her car, it meant something to her to find the parts for her own car.

She was actually impressed that you could get the replacement parts for much less there, so now she's a supporter of the junk yard because she understands it's value. When my daily broke, she was first to say, "Should we go check the junkyard??" :D Give her reason to care, and she's more likely to go.

Mine helped me part out a car when we were dating, you know they will do a lot of weird stuff at first, then a bit less and less, then they roll their eyes, then they see you pull out your kids money wad that you got by doing the worst and most crappiest jobs for at all hours or selling and wheeling, they make a comment like "How much money do you need to walk around with" or I see who's buying dinner tonight, you're holding out, or I need cash for gas for my car. Then you know it's over. Any poor bastard who has been married for 25 years knows that if he wants to keep his kids money wad he better not let that thing be seen by Mrs. Eagle eyes and Sticky Fingers, he will be spending it on mulch and daffodil bulbs. Here's a good rule of thumb, if you have holes in your newspapers or an envelope full of coupons, leave her home.

My wife went once, as we were leaving she told the owner that he needed to put a water fountain and some shade trees out there.

That was the way it was for many years, then came the divorce.

Do things with your wife and kids, then with your wife too. There will be lots of time for the junkyard later.

Lots of couples build separate lives, hers is usually based on the kids. When they are gone so is the marriage.

Good advice, up to you whether you take it or not. All depends on how much you want to keep your wife I suppose :D

Mine loves wrecking yards! Actually better at spotting stuff than I am... sometimes. She has actually helped pull some small parts at a yard on 105 degree day too! The only downside is that with coming from Hong Kong, everything looks old to her... even stuff like '87 Chevettes... CUTE! retts take home! Got her hooked on Falcons now, a step in the right direction.

  24. mine goes to the junk yards and does the tool box guarding while I rip into a junker she loves the swap meets and is my discount coupon. it is amazing how guys will sell stuff to a girl with a tank top and no bra cheaper than they will another guy....lol, works everytime and she just laughs at the way they scramble to help her and ignore other buyers

In 79 she went about 5 times, then on the last trip, we were in TX at the time, I mentioned that there weren't as many snakes or hornets as usual and she turned around headed out.
I followed her of course because I knew that her sitting out in the car for a coupla hours while I browsed wasn't gonna cut it.......she still works her ass off in the garage though.:)

  26. BORNTOLOSE that is darn funny! I haven't tried that one yet!

Actually my wife and I do a lot of stuff together (it's worked for over 26 years!) and she likes hot rods and car shows and the occasional junkyard trip. But the owner of the old country junkyard that we used to raid and find really cool stuff has quit the business and they get don't get the fun older stuff any more, so she finds other stuff to do on Saturdays. She'd sit & read in the truck or do needlepoint and just enjoyed getting out of the house for a ride in the country with me.

I'm glad that she still likes going to car shows and swap meets with me because I ALWAYS need her purse full of aspirin, pens & paper, hand cleaner, business cards, etc....

BUT - the reverse is true too! Every year just before Christmas she used to go to a big "arts & crafts bazaar" with some of her girlfriends. This year they were all too busy or didn't want to go and she had a few extra tickets. Since the show was about an hour's drive away, and she didn't want to drive alone and walk around by herself, she asked if I'd go... On the way up a friend of mine called me and asked what I was up to and my reply was "Paying my dues man! Paying my dues!!!"

And by the way, my big ol' Mickey Thompsons for the back of the 49 are in the guest bedroom, and when we had the Road Runner painted I stored the freshly painted fenders, hood and gravel pan in there too...

Yes, we go sometimes....she preferes the Auto Jumbles (swap meets), in fact she bought the rear indicator lights i've yet to put on the roadster.

  28. I've had my wife pick up parts from my junkyard sponsor back in the stock car days. She'd take my station wagon and they'd load whatever it was for her. Bumpers, fenders, radiators, etc.

I've taken her since to get odds and ends like hubcaps and interior pieces for her car, just so she knows where they come from. She thought it was cool that they stacked the cars so neatly.
