History NHRA Junior Stock

Anybody ever run the very rare 1968 Hurst Olds with a 455.
In 1968, just what class would they run?
Any special engine components in that unit.

Thanks for the great shots! I've seen the first photo, in fact, I think I had that issue of Raceway News some years ago, before moving to Florida (1972). I never saw the second (color) photo of the car. Very nice! Thanks, again. Keep 'em coming!!! Any photos of Billy Izykowski's "Paranoia" car or "Super Pumpkin"? Both were '66 Biscaynes running Stock bucks at Raceway Park around that time. The "Super Pumpkin" car was orange and ran a 427 - 390 hp - 4 speed combo if I remember correctly. I think they ran out of northern NJ.

Paul, here's a photo I took of a 1968 Hurst/Olds at Connecticut Dragway in 1969. I believe it ran in D/SA class. Classification is barely visible on windshield. My guess is that it would have been in C/SA in 1968 since the automatic equipped 442s ran D/SA in 1968 and E/SA in 1969. Gene

Anybody run the H/O successfully.
I know they were quite expensive cars to purchase.
A local dealer, Marty Motors, Mount Kisco, NY had one for a long time before it was sold.

Gary Wood was a regular at South Glens Falls Dragway.Know him fairly well.Could make the Pontiacs run.His wife,Charlene,won stock eliminator at the Grandnationals at Sanair in this car.Think it was one of the first times a female won a major meet.Saw the car in a local junkyard many moons later.
He ran a Sunoco station off of exit 16 on I 87 up here.
After racing he was dealing in record albums and now,last I knew,was wheeling and dealing in guitars.

 

The Olds that Jack Marks raced ran pretty well as I recall. We raced the same class. I think at the 1971 SummerNationals he was the fastest car in H/S and might have won the class......My partner made a driving error and we lost in the first round of class runoffs at that race. It was the first SummerNationals held at E-Town......Not the first SummerNationlas event as that was at York and not the first national event held at E-town.....'68 SpringNationals was held there....

 

I won it on a worldwide online auction... and I dare not say the websites name on the H.A.M.B.

The websites name starts with an E.

When we flat towed we did not hook any wiring from the tow car so we had no brake lights nor turn signals.-Jim

Colesy here's the only photo I have of that car.

 

I'm guessing that the 68' Hurst/Olds 455/390 HP cars were only
available with automatics, and obviously Hurst Dual-Gate Shifters.
Special HD Suspension, but available with what gears? Any options on gear raio.

 

This car was owned and driven by Frank Blagg with help from his friend Lee Sherrod. See names on rear quarter. The raced out of the Columbus OH Chesrown dealership! Frank campaigned this 69 W30 car later.

 

Pic from Winners Circle 68 Springnationals at E-town NJ --"To the victor belongs the spoils"!!!! This win validated Oldsmobiles presence in the muscle car game and was the first of many stock/superstock titles for the Olds contingent!!

 

Carmen rotonda in the former ernie musser(musser bros.-reading,pa.)world champ 61 corvette(i think this snap shot is at island).
Also snap shop of carmen rotondas 57 chevy jr.stocker-stone crusher.(i recall looking at this car at rotondas speed shop for sale-rolling,1972-73?-nice car!).i think rotonda also had a 58 chevy called stone crusher--have to check my pix.

67 W-30,
The success of the 67' 442's in B/Stock in 1967, prompted Doc Burgess,
owner of the 'Black Arrow' 65' Plymouth (AWB car) to sell it at the end of 1967,
and get into a 67' Oldsmobile 442 D/S in 1968.
Doc pounded some good 12.60's in 1968, with the already prepped 67' car.

Were batteries allowed to be relocated into the trunk in Junior Stock competition? Particularly in the 1969 to '71 seasons.

Plymouth had a 1966 Junior Stock Class recommendation book out back then.
Plymouth suggestions;
C/SA 1962 Sport Fury 383/343 HP
D/SA 1962 Sport Fury 361/305 HP
E/SA 1962 Belvedere 2-Seat Station wagon 361/305 HP

 

Not unless the specific combination originally came with the battery in an alternate location.
