In 1967, the 62' Plymouth 2-Seat Fury Wagon with the 361/305 HP would be classed in D/SA. In 1968, the car would be classed in G/SA. Suprisingly light at #3468 lbs. This looks like the Doug Kahl car. Didn't Doug take the 361/305 HP engine out of his 62' Sport Fury D/SA in 1966, and put it into this possibly 'acid-dipped' stretchy car.
Hey there it is... Karen Gaines - Gold '57 Chevy (my previous post 7840) I didn't know the heritage of the car it's self, but it looks like it went like this.... 1st - Marsh & Brock M/SA 2nd - then owned by Phil Cooper as a SS/QA 3rd - then the Gains got it and continued to run it as "the Gold SS/QA" that I remembered btw - Phil Cooper's stuff was always Very Very Nice!! His cars and equipment would make any racer droool. Realize this is the early 70's.... Phil was one of the first sportsman racers (in any class, especially a stocker or super stocker) that I can remember, that used a Chaparral enclosed trailer for transporting their car... Most guys considered themselves fortunate just to have an open trailer of some sort. For me the photo of Phil with the '57 on the ramp truck is priceless. I'll never forget that Gold '57 (orig post 4358). Larry
I see the Wheatley Bros. car in the background. Butch later ran a Pizzi prepped '69 Camaro in F/S and later with a big block in B/S.
Yes this is the same car. They teamed up for Indy 67, using Doug's Ted Spehar built engine in Tom's Wagon.

Must be a Western N.Y. thing. My family left that part of New York about 180 years ago but I'm still able to understand Paul. Must be one of those abilities that transcends the years. c
Lew would these photos in C/S be 1965? Also I do not know if I missed it but what is the story on your car in the avatar?-Jim
Well, I thought I posted this earlier today but it didn't show up. I am getting an inferiority complex. I am a Ford man and am having withdrawal symptoms with all this GM and Mopar stuff. Any good Ford photos? Please. I know, there's no crying in Drag Racing!
Lew Becker, The Pontiac GTO 'Tin Tiger I. Was a 1966 389/360 HP tri-power, 4-speed. Owned by Bob Gaudreau out of Bristol, Connecticut. Sponsored by Paul Dodge Pontiac, out of central Connecticut. 1966 = C/S,,,,,,,,,1967 = B/S,,,,,,,,1968 = D/S Ran many match races vs. Woodland & Anderson 4-4-2. I believe, Bob Gaudreau had the car up thru 1968, and then purchased a new 68' Hemi Factory S/S Cuda 'Candy Cuda'
I have a ton of vintage Ford drag racing photos, but they're all Super Stock drag racing photos and not warranted on this thread. According to the list posted below, there weren't too many Ford guys doing the Junior Stock thing back then. And though the list is not complete, it weighs heavily on the GM side. Would I prefer reading about Fords? Yes. But I don't mind any other brand cars... I enjoy reading the stories and learning about the history of the people and cars no matter what brand. Again, judging by this Junior Stock list compiled by I/SA Steve, I think it's safe to say that Ford vehicles were definitely in the minority as far as "Junior Stock" is concerned; hence the lack of posts, photos, and info. If I am wrong with my assumption, the Ford boys better "step it up", get on the list and start posting! I know the Jack Worrell car has been discussed a few times on this thread.
I am lookihg for any pictures of Larry Krome's 57 Chevy division 1 cars. He had held a natiomal record at one time.
Stang, If the 289/271 HP Mustang Fastback has D/S on the window, its from 1966. If it has C/S, its from 1967. If it has F/S, its from 1968. Tha 'Wild Pony' Mustang was pulling 12.80's in early 1967. Had several match races with Bob Bannings 1966 Dodge D-Dart in Maryland in 1967.
Thanks for the Ford photos, I'm coming around now and not so (Ford) blue. I remember that Drag News didn't have many Ford products in the results back then. There weren't many Fords in the Junior level classes around here either. Most of them were the 390 CU and up bunch. A few 289 hipos that later moved up to the lower SS classes. I had a '57 Ford 4-door hardtop in about '64 or but is wasn't a blower car but it was all I could afford. I also had one of those '70-'71 Fairlanes like the Expeditor (white sale special) 302 automatic cars that we put a gear in and ran at Silva, NC. You could run all day with that car and never hurt it. Not enough power to break anything. Win your bracket and get a quart of oil, some wax and maybe STP.
Alas, although the 227/317 W/ Hydro was a great combo, not many could prevail under the onslaught of the (same class) 220/283 and 195/265 deliverys. All of the cars that I can recall (including myself) are ... David Baker (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 5, Ed Beyer (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 1, Ed Hamburger (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 1, Gary Ledbetter (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 1, Steve Perrault (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 1 and Phil Szupka (56 Pontiac) NHRA Division 1. I know Ed Beyer and Gary set National Records ... not sure about the others. Best run I ever made was running a TRW-slugged, freshly-honed engine was 14.64/94.14 on a good day @ Cecil ... sometime in1968. Never had the bucks for 'skinny' (or Dykes)-ringed Forgedtrues, but the car did very-well @ Capitol and 75-80 for the first two seasons (67-68) I ran it ... lots of good memories. Rumor has it that another very-buck$-down racer named Johnny V Goode (search this thread for Johnny V) ran one, but methinks that's just a fable . Cheers! ... Steve
ATTENTION: Cee Dan Dee-livery fans ... For your viewing/listening pleasure, here's a thread-appropriate musical interlude from one of Canada's best --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdUC_GU4hYw "I'm thinkin' of no one in my mind Sedan delivery is a job I know I'll keep It sure was hard to find"
Steve, Although I did run chevys I always had sweet spot for the ponchos, do you know of anyone running the daul quad 285 hp motor. I have a bare bones safari with that motor and a 3 speed.
