it was converted here in wichita, buddy of mine did the paint and another friend did the interior. Big deal here in town, did they ever figure out the exact cause?

 

You are correct as to wood or coal gasification generator however any
carbon based fuel can and was used.
Guy that mentored me on auto mechanics told of German command car in
north Africa that ran on camel dung.
Also gas derived was methane not Hydrogen.

 

Man, this thread is awesome...I come back to it every Monday, and I always have consistently 10 pages or more to catch up with....

You're right, methane. We studied this in high school science. The application there as I recall was heating COAL very hot -- in the absence of oxygen so that it would not burn -- THEN introducing water to create a gas that itself was powerful and clean when burned, namely methane. They called it coal gas or even "white" gas in layman's terms, which can now be confusing. And methane occurs naturally in underground coal seams, one of THE major safety issues coal miners have to deal with (some understatement, eh?).

 

anybody under 40 that knows how to use one of these?

 

I'll bet some don't even know what it is let alone use one...........!

I've three that were my dads from when he worked as an engineer, when I was a kid he tought me how to use it but alas we got our first hand held "electronic" calculator in 1974 and I never looked back. I can still operate an E6B it's a form of "slide rule".
