Hot Rods do you take offence to your car being called a Jalopy??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tub in da dirt, Dec 15, 2010.

  1. So i have a company come out to quote on putting in some new welding hoods and smoke filtering systems at work. Its an expensive deal and it needs to be done right. I get the recomended vender who rolls up in a brand new STS-v cadillac and and nice suit. The guy knows his stuff and says all the right things to make me feel that way. So he follows me back to my desk so i can give him some drawings and specs. He sees some of my car stuff and we start talking cars. i tell him about my phaeton and some other projects that we are doing for other people and he starts talking about his "numbers matching CORVETTE" and big block 67 impalla and his zo6 and yadda yadda yadda. really a cool collection of muscle cars. so as he is leaving he says to me " we rent out the grove(great lakes drag way) for a day, how about you bring out one of your JALOPYS to run with the corvette club".....excuse me jalopys????

I think i am going with a different vender. those corvette guys just don't understand us

Totally agree. Not bangin the Corvette lovers, but they just don't understand hot rods. But no, I wouldn't take offense to the Jalopy term in certain contexts. However, his was condescending...

A buddy and I were out running around in his 62 vette and got invited to the Corvette club meeting. Biggest bunch of pud yankers I was ever around. I would not be offended if someone called my car a jalopy, after all isn't part of the HAMB the Jalopy Journal?

If the guy invited you to one of his shindigs, I don't see how you could take any offense....

I have told numerous guys that number 1 way to ruin a car show or cruise in' or any other hot rod function is to get a corvette or mustang club involved. They want 200 diffrent cl***es and wanna know how big the trophies are before they enter. What abunch of FOOLS they just done get it!

Agree X2. I guess it depends on who it is your talking with. I was at a local watering hole awhile back with some friends and a fellow former Marine walks in and greets me with "Hey Jarhead". The guys at the table thought it was funny and I couldn't get it through to them that he just gave me a compliment.

I don't particularly like the term "jalopy", but it sounds like he offered you the chance to go blow the doors off some fibergl*** cars and advance the "hotrod" cause.

I'm sure there was a time when what other's said or thought about my stuff mattered, but, as i've gotten older i could care less what anyone thinks.
My truck's been called a rat rod, jalopy **** box etc..makes no difference to me. I call it fun and call those who have to label things like that lame.

    Tony,

  14. I'm stoked to own a jalopy. I wish more people would say "nice jalopy" than "nice rat rod". It f@$&in' kills my soul!!! But when you're trying to gain business and spread the traditional gospel, you just gotta kinda grit your teeth, smile, and say "thaaaanks"...cause if you tell them to "get f@$&ed" they'll never learn.

Honestly, I don't care what anyone says about my cars who isn't into the same stuff as I am. I don't expect them to get it, and they don't.

So call it a rat rod, a jalopy, an old piece of **** that shouldn't be on the road.

None of it makes any difference to me unless it's coming from someone who I'd expect to know better, which happens to be a very small portion of the population.

Don't mix business with pleasure. If he can supply the right equipment at a good price "go for it." This is your chance to educate him. Having the Corvette ego just goes with the crossed flags. Besides you might meet some cool car guys along the way. Oh, jalopy is OK with me.

  17. I couldn't care what anyone calls my car ... really. It's mine, I built it for me to like not them. If they think it's a ****box/rat rod/jalopy/piece of ****ing **** that's fine with me. Lifes too short to get bent out of shape over something so trivial. Some people "get it" and some don't ... life goes on.

Jalopy is an endearing word we who know better have grown to accept and ove like 'Yankee Doodle" was years ago

    I've called mine worse.

Seriously though our cars are mutts, junkyard dogs. Even the finished, well thought out and engineered cars ( many on this forum ) are not purebreds by any means. So, yea, I drive a jalopy, proud of it. The junkyard dogs are the ones that get the respect when push comes to shove, may look mangy but in a fight it's the one to pick. So go play with the 'Vette set, you may beat a few, and may get beat by a few, but you'll respect yourself and maybe get a little (respect) back.

Ya, **** that guy. He must have been really tall, because he was looking down his nose at you. I would never be offended by my cars being called "Jalopy" by a regular car guy with a little dirt under his nails, but this guy needs a lesson in humility. I hope you can find a company with a humble rep. that does good work. Good luck.

I call corvettes "nissans " to my vette owning friends. They are a bit smug.

I wouldnt take offense to it, sounds like it was more of a razz to get you to actually bring something out to the track.

Look at my ride. What else would you call it?

Here is the Webster's definition: a dilapidated old vehicle.

I am not sure that fully describes how the term is used by car guys, but its not entirely inaccurate either.

You are both car guys. He invited you to go play. In his world, he probably did not know exactly what to call your car, so he used a more general term "jalopy". Some people use that term in a respectful way. You know, as in "Jalopy Journal". If he had said "rod or hot rod" it would have all been different. Labels ****.
