I love this thread. I never tire of checking it.

Now that is a great story! I feel so lazy after reading that.

Yeah, NovaDude55, growing up in the '50s and '60s, it seems
to me that various brands of soda pop were as much an element
of culture as anything. It's fun (and was fun then!) to see what
angles, catchy names, art, slogans and jingles were used to
promote sales. I remember long conversations -- even argu-
ments -- about where names came from OR what was actually
IN the stuff we drank to chill out. What, REALLY, did 7Up, 10-2-4,
and CocaCola really mean? Dr. Pepper, Coke and 7Up were all
sold -- at least in part -- for their supposed positive effects on
health or disposition, remember? Was Dr. Pepper's mysterious
"10-2-4" phrase really a sort of CODE for key SECRET ingredi-
ents? Was the cocaine in CocaCola? Was there lithium in 7Up?
It was all grist for the popular rumor mill, part of popular myth,
AND it all helped sell soda pop! Hell, if ad writers and color illus-
trations could sell SPAM, for gosh sakes, the same techniques
surely worked for soda pop bottlers! [Above: It was '55, the
girl was gone, and there was a new slogan. Below: A '30 ad,
when 7Up still contained a trace of lithium -- to lift the spirits
    and help chase a hang-over!]

Ya know, some great public services transpire on this thread.
So far today, folks have given William Walker his well-deserved,
deep-diving due, and they also certified that Tricky Dick is still
dead (along with Generalissimo Francisco Franco).

BUT, inquiring minds want to know:

What's the lady gonna do with the mallet up there
on the igloo? (Adjusting the thermostat, maybe?)

  16. 1929 Lee Bible in the tri-motored "Triplex" at Daytona

The Triplex weighed seven tons and was powered by three 12-cylinder Liberty Aircraft engines, capable of producing more than 1,200 horsepower.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Bible was killed in a pre-record land speed attempt March 13, 1929 at Ormond Beach, FL.

This photo is before he got in the car for his last ride.

At the wheel of the car that killed him.

    Just before the crash

Crowd gathered around wreckage that killed Lee Bible.

On his first run, Bible was clocked at 186 mph, well below the record of 231.44 mph held by Englishman Major Henry O. D. Segrave in his Golden Arrow.

On Bible's return run he was clocked at 202 mph. Shortly after the traps the car swerved, presumably because Bible released the accelerator too quick.

The Triplex crashed into the dunes and rolled, coming to a stop 200 feet further. Bible was thrown from the car, killing him instantly. The Triplex flew into cameraman Charles Traub, also killed instantly.
