Well this being my first build ever.... I am doing a budget build on 51 Cranbrook and well I was doing a floorboard peice where theres a hole... I jB welded the peice of metal to it then put fiberglass over it. Well I got the wrong type of fiberglass instead of the stringy stuff I got the smooth.. Well I layed the smooth stuff and it was my first fiberglass job and well it looked bad after I let it dry a couple days. Then i noticed seperation. So I started ripping the bad stuff off and it took my panel i put down with jB weld and ripped it right off so now I am very discouraged as I aint got much tools and welder is hard to come by and cant really trailer anything anywhere cause i dont got the means of doing it. All in all rookie mistake and shit dont stick to rust too well hopefully i can tackle it with a fresh mind after the holidays!
You can at least prep it right, if you don't have a grinder you can use a drill motor and a bunch of wire wheels to clean the surface. Oh yeah, wear long sleeves and gloves&goggles to fight off the wires that will fly off. Even pop riveting a piece of metal in is better than JB and fiberglass.
However you repair it, you need to grind or cut all the rust out first, or you will be doing it over. Isn't there anyone you could get to weld it for you? A small patch doesn't take very long, and if you did all the prep (cut a patch, ground the edges, etc) I'm sure you could take it to a muffler shop or something and have them burn it in for you in no time. Heck, if you don't mind bringing it to Acworth, GA, I'll help you. While I have seen some decent fiberglass repairs on steel, I still cringe at the thought. Glass is for fixing boats and Corvettes.
cut out the rot, grind the metal clean, prime and paint, pop rivet a panel in, then seam seal or "tiger hair". prime and paint, undercoat the bottom. not the right way but will work.
