History Photos taken before WW2 - history in black and white

  1. I believe that the Warrick was a sort of continuation of the Auto Carrier - built by an ex-employee of AC during the period 1914-19. There is a 1914 Warrick here in NZ. Coincidentally when it appeared after being restored about 20 years ago friend of mine in the local Vintage Car Club commented that her grandfather had driven one at his job in London in the 1920s.

Beautiful shot. Anybody know the approximate year?

Early thirties? I think Charles Lindbergh was still a Captain in 1927. This looks like a Shorpy photo to me, but I wasn't able to find it quickly. This photo indicates that Washington-Cadillac was indeed documented by Natl Photo, one of Shorpy's sources for material.

Thanks for your take on that pic, BigCheese. I actually don't remember where I found it. Shorpy is a ton of fun, but I don't make it over there often -- even though I am a member. Yes, NATIONAL PHOTO must have been as ubiquitous a photo service in its day as AP, UPI and Rueters were later on. Many of the Shorpy pix are credited to them. My fault: SORRY I didn't make note on this particular photo, folks!

  11. I don't know about Lindbergh but if we assume the car on the right - a 1927 LaSalle - is new, then it is 1927. I have just looked in my copy of 80 Years of Cadillac LaSalle and there is a pic there of a new 1927 LaSalle roadster with a 1927 Missouri license tag parked in front of The Spirit of St Louis. I wonder if it is this same car.

If we could read those two signs in the window we might be better informed. The early Cadillac - 1905 Model F(?) - obviously also has some significance.

I think the sign on the left says "Prof. Langley's Car" and the one on the right says "Col. Lindbergh's Car", so it must be some kind of aviation tie-in (Langley was an aviation pioneer).

    This is Lindbergh's LaSalle:

Before I read up on the subject, I thought Durant was just a pushing industrial mogul. In fact, he took some big knocks in the auto biz, didn't he?!?!? Ups AND downs!

New York State's first steam powered passenger locomotive, the Dewitt Clinton, pulled trains on the Mohawk and Hudson between Albany and Schenectady.

And if I'm not mistaken, this one now resides inside The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

  28. Obviously a quick snap and not a formal photo as the guy in the suit is walking. A 1912 Hupmobile 32 parked in front of a Cadillac and Overland garage.
