crime scene..Frankie Yale gunned down in his Lincoln in 1928. He was a big-time criminal and was suspected of double-crossing Al Capone stealing booze shipments. He was tailed by gunmen in a Buick that overtook Yale's Lincoln and then opened-fired riddling the Lincoln with bullets.
Yales funeral procession was viewed by thousands on the streets as 110 Cadillac limousines carried the mourners.

January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American musician and visual artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. His musical work was conducted with a rotating ensemble of musicians he called The Magic Band, active between 1965 and 1982, with whom he recorded 12 studio albums. Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range,[4] Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. His music blended rock, blues and psychedelia with free jazz, avant-garde and contemporary experimental composition.[5] An iconoclastic mix of complex instrumentation, atonal melodies, and often humorously surreal lyrics, it was crafted through dictatorial control over his musicians and creative vision.
During his teen years in Lancaster, California, Van Vliet acquired an eclectic musical taste and formed "a mutually useful but volatile" friendship with Frank Zappa, with whom he sporadically competed and collaborated.[6] He began performing with his Captain Beefheart persona in 1964 and joined the original Magic Band in 1965. The group drew acclaim with their first album in 1967 on Buddah Records, Safe As Milk. After being dropped by two consecutive record labels, they signed to Frank Zappa's newly formed Straight Records. Zappa as producer granted Beefheart the unrestrained artistic freedom to release 1969's Trout Mask Replica, ranked fifty-eighth in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.[7] Having not been paid for a European tour, and worn out from years of Beefheart's abusive behavior, the entire "Magic Band" left him in 1974. A brief and critically panned flirtation with more conventional rock music resulted in two albums he later disowned. Beefheart then formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained contemporary approval through three final albums: Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (1978), Doc at the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982).
Van Vliet has been described as "one of modern music's true innovators" with "a singular body of work virtually unrivalled in its daring and fluid creativity".[5][8] Although he achieved little commercial or mainstream critical success,[9] he sustained a cult following as a "highly significant" and "incalculable" influence on an array of New Wave, punk,[10] post-punk, experimental and alternative rock musicians.[8][10] Known for his enigmatic personality and relationship with the public, Van Vliet made few public appearances after his retirement from music (and from his Beefheart persona) in 1982 to pursue a career in art, an interest that originated in his childhood talent for sculpture. His expressionist paintings and drawings demand high prices, and have been exhibited in several countries.[5][11][12] Van Vliet died in 2010, after many years suffering from multiple sclerosis.[13] From Wikipedia

I've seen old Moxie ads never saw it for sale around the Detroit area but for all you Detroiters out there Vernors Ginger Ale shares the title of America's oldest surviving soft drink with Hires Root Beer. It was invented in 1866 by James Vernor, a Detroit pharmacist.No horse cars just a gnome.

 

Never saw Moxie in this area either. But yeah, plenty of Vernors. About 20 years ago I found a place near Marine City (north of Detroit), they had a barn FULL of old wooden Vernors crates. Apparently one of the bottlers rented the barn as storage but never came back to get them. The loft was chock full of crates. The property owners had a bunch of them sitting out in the yard for $1 each. I grabbed a pickup load of them, still have quite a few. Most were dated in the 50s and early 60s.

".........he was buried that afternoon, Tuesday at 4.30. They obtained a coffin – Harold engraved the following inscription in plate for his coffin – Cavalry Captain Baron Von Richthofen aged 25 Killed in Aerial combat Sailley-le-Sec Somme France 21-4-18. There were three wreaths one from 5th Div HQ with German colors and the card read to a worth and valiant foe. Another wreath came from the Royal Air Force and one from our own 3rd Squadron each having the German colors.

We supplied a firing party of 25 men, he was given a full military funeral ....................."

Gerry (and quite a few english groups of the era) still tours. He makes regular visits to Australia. We make it to one of his shows each tour. He'll be here again in 2011 and we will be in the audience.

He is a carrying more weight these days, but so am I.....

 

Chivalry is not dead. It is a traditional, knightly quality, a mode, an attitude of honorable behavior in all good soldiers and true gentlemen.

But there are places where you can't find an ounce of the stuff today.
