Event Coverage ***PICS- GENE WINFIELD Metalshaping Workshop @ Gambino Kustoms***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rusk, Dec 21, 2010.

  1. Whew....I think I've finally recovered from one of the best, most sleep-deprived weekends I've had in a long time. Aside from Mugford snoring louder than a planishing hammer, the reason I didn't sleep was that there was just way too much cool **** going on.

The Lincoln chop started before I got there around 7 on Friday and went well past midnight. We were up early on Saturday to get some grub and then on to the workshop, which was a marathon of metalshaping that lasted until sometime after 6. A quick break for dinner and we were right back on the Lincoln.

Sunday started early again and was more non-stop shaping, welding, and finishing techniques. By the time I got home from San Jose, it was almost 10 p.m. I think I clocked less than 10 hours sleep over the whole weekend compared to 30 plus hours of learning, discussing, and practicing time-tested, traditional fabrication techniques. Talk about getting your money's worth!

A huge thanks to Gene, Alex, Dave, and the rest of the guys that put on this fantastic event. I know there was the full range of experience in the cl***, from the young guy still in high-school to the guys who own shops, design their own tools, and put on their own shaping cl***es, and I'd be highly surprised if they all didn't learn some new tips and tricks from each section of the cl***.

Anyway, enough of my rambling.....here are some of my pics....

Working out the cuts on the package tray...

    Marking the windshield centerline...

Gene starting to cut out the package tray...

Mugford getting precise with the air-saw...

    Dave in the MATRIX...

Cutting out the bracing in the C pillars...

    Dueling cut-off wheels...

    A pillars coming down...

    Lift off...

In order to get the A pillars to line up after the center section was cut out, the lower portion was heated and brought in...

And the new profile (sort of, there was still some bracing and wheel-well that had to be cut out, so the top could come down all the way in the back)...

That's it for Friday, stay tuned for the workshop pics...

    cool thanks for the pics

  4. You would have loved it! Four or five years back, I had a chance to go to his workshop in Mojave and was just too busy...regretted it ever since. Try to make the next one, it's worth every penny.

Here are my pics from Saturday and Sunday. Most of the time, I was too immersed in the cl*** to grab my camera, but I did manage to capture some of the highlights.

    Annealing aluminum for shaping...

More annealing, this time on a curved panel that Gene had tuck-shrinked...

After some pick and filing, Gene is using the ******* to metal finish this panel....

    Some gas-welding...

    Hammer-welding on a shoebox fender...

Aligning the tubing for a pair of frenched antennas...

Lazze was there with one of his bead-rollers (as Scott pointed out, it's a hell of a lot more than a bead-roller)...

Gene showing us how to make window frames for a chopped '41 Ford...

Gas-welding aluminum (we all had a chance to try this out)...

Gene showed us his leading techniques on a '37 Zephyr fender...tinning...

    Applying lead...

Heating the paddles so the wax will stick...

Spreading the lead (we all had a chance to do this too)...

    A couple random shots...Dave's workstation...

    Beverly shear...

Some of the guys in the cl***...

And a bad-***, mini roadster side-panel made by Lazze and signed by Gene...

That's it from me. If you have any pics or any comments on the cl***, please post 'em up.

Had a great time hanging out with Gene, and learned a million new
Things that I'll never forget. Gene is one hell of a guy. I got a bunch of pics I'll have to post up later.
