i am needing to do something with my carb, either fix the old holley or get a different one. its a 406 block 390 heads, weiand intake, and right now it has a 750 holley vs with a stuck chock and secondarys. im mainly going to drive the car the car, no real track time or racing. any suggestions on cfm size or holley or eldebrock?
For street use I would use a Edelbrock carb,,,I have a 406 tripower motor I just got,,,not running yet,,,I also use a 390 in my F350 car hauler with a Edelbrock,,,,much more forgiving than a Holley for every day use with less fuel filters,,,easier to adjust,,,easier to rebuild,,,excelent throttle response,,,,just an opinion.....
I would use an Edelbrock (AFB Carter) with 600 cfm. If gas milage is a real big issue you could probably use a 500 cfm of the same but the problem is it'll be a real dog and your probably going to big stepping on it harder just to get it up to speed and not really gaining anything. I have one on a 71 F100 with a 390-C6 and 3:25 gears and @ a steady 65mph it with deliver 14-15 and sometimes up to 16mpg. It also has DuraSpark 2 ignition from a 76 Ford pickup and dual exhaust 2 1/4". Its also on a Weiand intake. Michael
750 Holley is a good all around carb choice. There are a variety of 750's out there though and the HP series are a step above the generic models. Knowing your list number (located on the choke horn) helps in identifying exactly which model of 750 you have.
it says 3310 on the choke horn. with a 600 eddy, it will still be enough right? i mean i dont want it to be a total dog. i just will be driving it alot so drivability is real important. and enough power to play with. what do you guys think?
A Edelbrock(basicly a Carter with Edelbrocks name on it) which you can buy pretty much at any store like O'Rilley's or Auto Zone. I don't mind Holley's but if the vehicel is a little cold and it coughs back thru the carb. you probably going to have to put in a power valve. And the Edelbrock has a lot less adjustments. Michael
The old Autolite 4100 carb was a decent carb for an FE. Personally, I like genuine Carter AFB's. The unfortunate issue is that to really get a good one for use on an FE, you have to take two (one A/M, one Lincoln) and marry the two. But then I like fuel economy with my performance. Jon.
Many many guys had problems of the 390/406s "shutting down" like a fouled gas tank or line or bad pump,etc.,etc. with the AUs & AVs Holley Carbs. It seems like the company that provided the metal to Holley to build the carbs with used some wrong components that reacted with the gas to clog the carbs!! There is a serial number range of the bad carbs (a LOT of them),and if you contact Holley and give them your numbers they will EXCHANGE (at no cost) your carbs. I have a friend that tried for months to fix his '63 1/2 Galaxie's 3 x 2s problem/sold the car CHEAP and the new owner got new carbs from Holley and fixed the problem! Tom
I run an Edelbrock 1406 on my 390/C6. I believe Holley is a great carb, but I enjoy my maintenance free Eddy. Just set it and go...
so a 600 eddy seems like enough for a mild 390? now i just need to find one and sell my holley. are the throtle linkages about the same between the two carbs?
I have ran a lot of different carbs on 390s. I had good luck with the 1850 600 cfm right out of the box. My last one I had a 350 2 bbl. It was a pickup and lacked a little past 4 grand but drove out just fine.
well i just bought a new eddy 600 and went to put it on and fire up the car only to find that the flange bolt holes are stripped and cant bolt it on.
What kind of fuel pressure do eldebrocs like? Thinking of putting the summit brand polished one on it. Just looking for some input
The Edelbrocks and AFB's run best with 5 to 5.5 psi fuel pressure and never ***ume that because you have a stock fuel pump that you won't have pressure in excess of that,it is always a plus to run a regulator with these carbs.
And I probably won't need any more than that? So it may be a waste to get a higher pressure one? My Holley on my last engine liked @7 psi.
