What are you rag top owners using to clean/restore, and condition. What i have is a white top that is yellowed and is 10-12 years old but in very nice condition. other than its dirty. I dont want it to get brittle on me. I have used products like simple green and 3ms stuff. I have also been told by to get some stuff called Rag Top. But I have not used it. any insite would be helpfull before i start experimenting. thanks
All I ever used in the "Old Days" on my 59 Chevy "Drop top" was Ajax or Comet and a scrub brush. I worked great. Tom (Tired Old Man)
i just painted up a 66 stang convertable and had a little hole in my white masking paper that i didnt catch(white top) light blue car.. but anyways i used some polishing compound on the overspray and it worked ace. just compound on a clean rag. give er a try
I use the Rag Topp brand cleaner and protectant. It's recommended by HARTZZ cloth convertible top material and it works great on my beige top.
I used Westley's whitewall cleaner & a brush it brought the White back to a 57 Chevy & 61 Catalina rag top you Have to Protect your paint job & Your Eyes when using it
Never thought of using Westley's, and i have a few jugs laying around. I am concerned about hurting the vinyl and the threads. Do you guys use any type of sealer or conditioner?
could be a problem i don't know just used it for a one time clean up after that just car wash soap my top was super filthy so i went for it, since we did it to the 57 Chevy and it came out snowy white that top was near black had nothing to loose you don't want to get it on your paint it will spot sometimes
Ok, I tried comet, simple green, and westleys today . And the westleys works the best. None of them took out the small rust stain though. So I did the whole top and Ill hit it again after I finish the paint work. Thanks
CLR is used for removing rust stains, not sure if you could use it on this??? Should be a product out there used to clean or re,dye vert tops,Ya might ask Eastwood products.
While a top was being put on my 36 roadster I noticed he was useing "SPRAYWAY- gl*** cleaner", The material was mercedes, he said that this was the best for cleaning rag tops. He's done them for decades, so thats what I use. Roger
Obviously there is a difference betwwen a cloth top and a vinyl top. I use Wesley on my white vinyl tops. On my black cloth Corvette top I just used a soft brush.
If you decide to use the Westley's product, be sure to quicly remove any of the stuff that might drool down onto your paint! If you let it sit too long and it dries, you will be sorry as it is a ***** to get it off and to restore the paint. Nevertheless, this is the only product I have found that actually seems to restore the "white" to a white vinyl top. But, if your white top is old and is yellowing to such a stage that nothing seems to work, I am afraid that a new top is the only cure. Just my 2cents...which is why I will never again have a white top!
Ya gotta admit though that a white top is the most striking on any convertible and certainly worth the effort involved in keeping it clean......if your top is up.
Yea I thought I would do all the rough cleaning before the new paint. thanks for the info. It will clean up good. and save me some cash. There is no help for the boot, will have to get a new one. Cant wait till summer, so i can drive aroun with the top down. Like a high roller.
I've sold our Crud Release product to guys cleaning old whitewalls as well as vinyl tops with great success. You could follow it up with our Vinyl Shine to keep it looking good.
Sorry Denise, can't agree with you here. The effort to keep the top clean is just to much. I spend half the time I should be out cruising trying to clean the top on my '63 Dodge. That does not convert to fun. My Caddy has the beige Haartz cloth top and I spend literally no time cleaning it. I stand back, look and think to myself - white ****s! Just my 2 cents...
