I'm ripping this 47 Chevy apart to get ready for a color change and new interior. As I'm pulling the rear fenders off I realize, where can I get some custom color fender piping? I'm not sure if that is the correct name (most likely not) however, it is the vinyl (or whatever its made of) piping that goes between the body and the rear fender. Anyone know who carries custom colors of this?

you could probably have an upholstery shop make some in any variety of colors you want...other than that 'Chevs of the 40s' or 'Filling Station' would have original which is usually black

Seems Ford used a lot of Brown welting, and Mopars used a stainless steel and canvas style.

I bought some from C W Moss in Socal. It is SS and has held up extremely well on my 39. Just a bit difficult to bend, but not too bad and looks great. Been there for more than 20 yrs

I've owned lots of old cars with the welting between the body and fenders. Black is definitely the way to go. Chevs of the '40s sells the correct size and pattern for your car.

The last time I painted my '40 I left the welt out during the spray and spaced the fenders out with a few washers. after sanding and buffing I took out the spacers and sliped in the welt. No overspray and it looked great.

Just redid my 36 and used welting, there is an additive that you can add to you car's paint color and spray the welt it comes out looking good and with a little wax on it from when you do your car it should last as long as your car color, this is available at your auto paint store.........:D

That is great to hear. I will check into that. Has anyone else heard of or used the additive?

Point of fact, the higher priced cars in the 30s and 40s used fenderwelt painted the same color as the car. If you buy cheap shit made of plastic it will indeed fade from UV exposure. Find a good grade of vinyl that matches the color as close as humanly possible and have it made. Don't fall into the thinking that it's a cheap add-on. Done right it's a touch of class.

Welting can be painted. Vinyl welt----use additives required to paint vinyl. Fabric welt----probebly don't need additives. Stainless welt----should prime it first. In all cases don't load on heavy coats. Try to achieve color with as few coats as possible. Paint it after it is fitted to the car after careful masking.

One more time for Juliano's. They have quite a selection of colors. Reread what Highlander posted.......... good information and he does it on some very high end cars.

if you really want color go get marine grade vinyl at your upholstery supply house and the welt piping and just have some one sew it up. if you want it painted get some ppg flex additive and mix it in your paint just get the vinyl to match close to the color you want to paint and spray just enough to cover it. the welt will flex with out the paint cracking off. my old boss used to do this all the time back when cars were being painted turquoise and baby blue back in the 90's

Julianos in CT does custom colors. Send a color swatch to them and they can send samplesback to you.
