Ooops...it appears I've posted some of these earlier in the thread. I forgot. I'll leave them anyways. : )
Would love to see the plans for your 41 Ford... sounds really interesting. And if Steve is drawing it.. it must be beautiful. Johnny Zaro's 1941 Ford convertible with full Fade Away Fenders had full moon disk with trim rings in 1948 (the car was built for John Vera, and could even have been his when this photo was taken in 1948) Later John switched to Cadillac Sombrero's As for the 41 Chevy. I have two more photos of it... but no further info. In Primer And later with gloss paint and a questionable License plate location/cover/bodywork.
Thanks for the pics guys, it always makes my day when this thread pops up with new pics . I really love the 36 Tudor!
Lyons aftermarket hubcaps.... there where many different versions made by Lyons in the 1940's and 1950's. Jimmy Summers also used them on his 1940 Mercury when he redid the car in metallic green.
Thanks Rik. I wasn't aware that Lyons made those. Those things are deep! I guess I was only familiar with the early style Lyons cap that fits over the stock Ford or Packard cap.
Reading through Hot Rod May 1948 I came across a Barris kustom I hadn't heard about before. The car was a 1939 Mercury owned by Mickey Chiachi. The car is drop dead gorgeous and I would love to see more photos of it. Have anyone ever seen this car in any old mags, or on photos from the barris shop or the dry lakes? According to the caption Mickey ran his car on Rusetta!
Great car... but I think its a Ford, not Merc.. most likely labeled wrong in the Hot Rod Magazine. I have not seen this car before... But it does look a bit like this one from the May 1953 Hop Up article on the Barris Shop. It looks like the hood on both photos has the character line on the front of the hood hammered smooth... Most of the 39-40 Fords with raised front fenders and sectioned hoods still have this line. But it could be the lightning as well that makes it look like there is no line. And there is another photo of this Barris 1939 Ford in the Barris Kustoms Technique II book (page 12)
I agree, the front and windshield looks to be ford, so I guess it must have been a typo. Any other way to identify it as a Ford? The one you posted from 1953 looks like a Merc doesn't it?
No that one is a Ford as well. The Merc has much more slant on the windshield, thicker A-Pillars... and longer differently shaped front fenders/hood. The rear fenders on a Merc looks a lot different as well, they look narrower than the Ford rear fenders. Both these cars are Fords for sure. The photo you posted is clearly taken outside the Compton Avenue Barris Shop.
Poor scan.... but its a very nice early custom. I think this is Earl Bruce with his 1937 Ford Custom.
Thanks Rik. The Valley Custom cars always seem to have a higher build qaulity, but i'm biased. Any idea about the club jackets?
Yes, it's Japanese. I think it means Moonshiners. Thanks again Rik. Never heard of this club before. Anyone know the history?
more 40's customs for this cold sunday. Well looks like I will have to go with one bar cabs on the 41 from the looks of it ya .
Mark, Any chance you could make a larger scan of these... just like the others. These four photos of this 1940 Ford are amazing! Thanks
Is this the same car dealer that had the Jimmy Summer's built '36 3w for sale? btw fantastic pics rodncustom, thank you for posting.
No, the photos posted on the previous page were taken at the D&B Motors lot. And Jimmy's 36 Ford was photographed at the Smith Car Co. lot. Scan from the Hot Rods & Custom Cars book (Strother MacMinn) And this is the D&B lot... Scan from the Hot Rods & Custom Cars book (Strother MacMinn)
