I'm Ok where I am but I missed out on a new years party at my good mates place as the highway was cut off. I believe there are 8 towns now that have been declared 'Disaster areas'. But thats all north of me. Man I thought I saw the last of floods when I left the farm, the Goulburn River was about 100ft from the front door. It would come and visit every now and then.

I was 11 years old when that photo was taken. I was there in Daytona that year. That was my first time to Daytona and it was quite a thrill for me.

Flooding in Van Nuys 1/4/1952

Before WWII, Van Nuys had been a small town surrounded by orange and walnut groves. One could literally walk from Van Nuys Bl. over to Hazeltine’s agricultural area. After the war, the Valley and California exploded in population. Every square acre of land was developed for housing, shopping malls, freeways, and factories.





changes that came to Van Nuys in the late 1950s and early 60s: demolition of old houses on the site of the Valley Governmental Center, the widening of Victory Blvd.

 

What amazes me about these old auto racing photos is the closeness of the crowd to the track. This would never be allowed today. As a kid I went to many many races where there were flimsy fences separating the track from the stands but nothing like the one in the photo. You would think the track's insurance company would have insisted on something more substantial. But then . . . those were the days when we all rode around in cars without seat belts, rode our bikes without helmets, played with toys made of tin with sharp edges and such. I guess what seems outrageous now was just normal back then.

 

It's a wonder we all survived.

my driveways are both 1/4 mile dirt roads, one is flooded, luckily I have two.

I, too, had wondered where this beautiful falls was/is. It put me
in mind of Bridal Veil Falls. Regardless of what the B&W fans
may say, I am glad this was shot in the rich color of the era. (Is
that brown convertible a '41 or a '42?) Anyway, THANKS Mazoo-
ma for posting and Twin6 for ID-ing it as Multnomah Falls in Oregon.
You just have to love the HAMB!
