The point is... again... when mag wheels came out, especially Cragar in 1964-5, things were turning into an era of performance. Slicks and racing wheels and new designs were exciting and based upon the need for better and safer equipment in racing. I would say Radirs were more of a "showy" wheel, but Cragars were built for performance. Read the Roy Richter story. He cared little for angel hair and spot lights. He was on the cutting edge of racing.

These new wheels resemble racing wheels. They are a replica, or pay homage to the GT350 wheels... for MUSTANGS. By then wide whites were for antiques.

"Production Shelby Mustangs wore a variety of wheels including Ford OE wheels from a Galaxie, along with wheels from American Racing and Cragar. Sizes were 15x51/2-inches and the stock tires were Goodyear Blue Dots. Peter Larkin's model sports 205/60R15 Pirelli P6000s on the Cragars, which were leftover from the '65 models."

For the record, Kirk started Billetproof with a 1963 cut-off year just to not be able to let Mustangs in.

Put wide whites on them... I will laugh. You can do what you want. What do I know?

Maybe some of the cars in the photos were built by some who subscribed to the "Fuck 'em all -- It's your car, build what you want" school of thought.:D

Another good point. I know a few older gentlemen who's words carry weight but I've also met quite a few that I suspect toyed around a bit back then and only really got into cars once they retired and had nothing better to do with their time and money. Keep in mind the average person knows little about cars and things weren't much different back when. The same goes for taste. I try to keep an open mind but as said "pictures don't lie".

pretty true but then hot rodding did actually spawn from a "do what you want" attitude as did customs... if you think about it almost everything cool about cars and motorcycles came from a "do what you want" attitude

thank god people had that mindset or we would just be restoring cars....it's not a bad thing to be a free thinker, you just can't expect everyone else to follow you...

You've been on the HAMB since '04, and you haven't recognized yet the people who frequent this forum who's word you can trust? That's pretty depressing.:(

People still are and are more than free to do so. Many people on here have interests 180 deg. from what goes on here. When hot rodding started there were no "traditional hot rods". It's not possible without history and that's just it H.A.M.B.-traditional=history. The people here respect and appreciate it enough to recreate and restore it.

Ahh OK I understand. I can only guess if you are willing to give up your freedom to build what you want it must be a really, really important car show

Holy cow, this guy gets it.... How can anyone here be a registered user and this be a new concept?

If you want to go off on your own path, there are places for you. Ol Skool Rodz is always looking for new "hell yeah bro" people who don't have respect. If you appreciate tradition, and either know enough to know what it is, or have a desire to learn more about what happened, this is a great place to be. But you can't belly up in the bakery and then start telling them how to cook...

I am not the traditional be-all-know-all being, but this isn't my first year here, either... if you didn't know opening your neighbor's mail was a federal offense, it's still illegal...

If somebody wants to know if putting outdated wide whites on a Mustang wheel is correct, and I tell him not really, and back it up with information that illustrates that the wheel and tire are from a different era, I've done all I can do.

I've seen wide whites on Corvette Rally wheels, Weld Wheels, IROC wheels, and slot mags painted red. I'd REALLY like to not have to have that kind of imagery seared into my brain again... Asking is smart. Telling somebody to go for it on a board that is concerned with tradition isn't really if you think about it.

You appear to have (or like) a Bonneville car. What if you showed up without a fire system, or a roll bar and told them to screw off you can build what you want? Would that make you right? Or would you "give up your freedom" and abide by the rules set in place on their event to participate? That must be a really, really important thing to drive your car all by yourself for no good reason.

It is what it is. Want to bowl? You have to wear the shoes.

Hey, I know what you mean. I tried to enter a shake your booty contest at one of those low rider shows one time and they told me to get lost...I suspect it was because I didn't shave my mangina or possibly the beard...I dunno.

I know!...it's the new 7-11. You can get beer and popcorn, and just to give it a chance, here's some other options from the back cover of the 1963 Petersen Custom Car Yearbook.

    and from their site:

"Rust or sagging springs do not count. Rust has nothing to do with traditional hot rods or customs."

    That is awesome...

Ahhh, I just figured out what spawned SCs post and although I agree there's evidence of large numbers of cars running around in the 60s with mismatched wheels, I just want to make it clear that my comments had nothing to do with Dean Lowe.

    Now proceed.

Holy Fucking Christ...I leave a simple post up asking if you guys though these wheels looked ok on the car-call it a do these jeans make my ass look big or the "prom dress" ideal mentioned earlier in this thread, and some of you extreme nazi-esc bastards turned this into a dick measuring contest. WTF???? I understand that not every car is being built as perfect period correct, and thats fine, but Holy Shit!!! Some of you guys really need to invest in some xanax.

In their defense I have been contacted by both members of the Czars and the person running Vintage Torque Fest, and while the reviews are mixed of running wide whites on these mags-they have all said that they would have no problems with my ideas or the wheels. I started this post for a couple of reasons, 1 to find out if i would blow through the criteria of a couple of shows that I really enjoy and respect, and 2 to see if my ideals were way off base. Not to hear you guys sit from yer rusty chapels and preach of right and wrong. Do me a favor and next time you want to hi-jack somebody thread and preach about right and wrong-go slam yer dick in the door of yer way kooler than anybody elses car...maybe then you will feel better. As to the folks that actually voiced their opinions of a wheel/tire combe Thanks!!! As to the preachers-and the know it alls-piss off!!!

but most importantly thanks again for being honest, this is my fault I was dumb enough to ask for an honest opinion...what the fuck was i thinking????

Have them on my 64 Grand Prix with redline radials. The centers are the painted gray ones which were very rough texture.I cleared them with a PPG clear and now they are much smoother and easier to clean.
They won't get you banned but they will get you trophys,(if you like that sort of thing).
p.s. I painted the blue in the center cap with a sharpie!

Perfect. The guys you disagee with are "extreme nazi-esc bastards" and the guys that agreed with you get a thank you...
The name-calling crap is just a bit childish (and actually will get you banned).
It's really quite simple. Sometimes the truth hurts, and if you can't handle the truth, don't ask for opinions...

Ok let me try this again for those of you that need crayons to see things for what they really are. I simply started a post asking what people thought of a new wheel/tire combo for my 50 Chevy, very simple right?? I see posts everyday about color choices, wheels, motors, etc... Instead of getting opinions on just the wheels, I got a history lesson from those who chose to voice their opinions about what they think "should" be. If I want a history lesson I can open a book, go back to school or turn on the history channel. Not every car will fit in to a certain catagory, or should they...but I forget that we now live in a PC world so to those who might be hurt....

GO UPSTAIRS GRAB A TAMPON, SHOVE IT IN THAT GAPING HOLE AND I PROMISE THE BLEEDING WILL STOP SOON...

    feel better???

and no I am not looking for sheeple to agree with everything I say, if that was the case I would not be asking for opinions...but seriously this was not what this thread was created for, and honestly I really was pissed reading over 100 posts from guys going back and forth about who is right and who is wrong.

honestly no I have not yet made any decisions as of yet, I am still on the fence between a painted steelie with spider cap & trim rings or a full set of mags. I love both looks, but need to make a decision sooner or later....trust me I am sure to piss somebody off no matter what i do :)
