I used to play on the ice all the time. We just made sure we had our windows down just in case we had to bail fast.

I lost a friend in that same lake about 25 years ago about this same time. went threw on a snowmobile. i've never been on ice since that time.

rest in peace Pete. Miss you.

  3. Back when the winters here were -20 for a couple months at a time, we used to drive on the ice all the time....what a blast!

  4. Wanna go to Merrill this year for the Drags?

Let me know... Zenor as well as others will be up there...

Here's a small sample... top speed in the eighth mile is over 150 mph

Those are fun pics. Makes my stomach do flips looking at them though, especially with that transparent green ice. Wow!

Which castle, that lake is full of big old estates. The only place to get on Oconomowoc Lake is the Lake Club and its private. I don't know that lake as well and being deeper it freezes later.
Merrill sounds like fun. I'll see what's on the calander.

  7. It's the original Castle... built between 1880-1898 and modeled after the "Bullin Castle" in England.

Kinda small at 11,000 sq ft but it has a 3,500 sq ft carriage house to die for and 2,500 sq ft servants house that I'd love to own!

I think there is a rough DNR launch to the lake and it might be accessible since the snow disappeared.

Pony up 6 million and you can buy the Marjorie Ward estate , daughter of Montgomery Ward, on Lac la belle. Its about 13,000 sq. ft. but no carriage house or servants house.

Why do they need to do a burnout run on the ice? Seems like heating the rubber up wouldn't exactly be needed or even be possible.

Looks like the launched chew up the ice pretty good too. Do they just move the tracks around to new ice when it gets too thin?

If the water around here froze up like that in the winter, we'd all be dead.

We used to play on the ice on Lake Erie as a kid and while we would never allow ourselves to chcken out I never got used to the creaking and groaning.

Eerie sounds if you've never heard them.

  19. somtimes the lakes are safer to drive than the local streets ... laws have changed now and speed limits and out doing spin outs is frowned upon ...
remember some guys cut huge ice spearing holes and those suitcase sized chunks don't move when refrozen on the surface hard to spot when covered with snow and in the dark..

lotsa times cutting accross lake was a shorter distance funny how it does not freeze flat more undulating ..you can catch air over these ridges

someone asks how do ya stop ... eventually maybe... hope not by impact .

best place to teach some one how to drive and get a feel for gettin loose ... listening for engine speed ..

  20. Just so you warm country folks know. Lakes up here can freeze 3 feet thick or more. Sometimes they freeze to the bottom and they fish cant swim until spring, suspended animation if you will. We have a 4 foot ice auger and there are times it will barely find cold water before the handles bottom out on teh ice.

We used to ditch school in the winter and race all the time. Its a lot of fun. I used to be a little concerned about it till I saw one of my friends father take his D6 Cat out there and clear off a path. Guess if it was good enough for that it was okay with us!

In 1904, Henry Ford set a land speed record (90+) driving on the frozen surface of Lake St. Clair.

We were out on Golden Lake today on the far west end- about 10 inches and it was like looking through a pane of glass. Three of us were standing on a fissure of sorts and a big crack came ripping through, we all saw it, and I jumped back about 3 feet. Talk about a pucker...I don't think jumping back woulda helped me out much.

No award needed, it's really not about big balls, it' more about knowing the lake and understanding the ice. Growing up around the lakes in this northern climate and using a bit of caution helps. When you want to come to Wisconsin in the winter I'll teach you about the ice and when I come to Florida you can teach me about alligator hunting. It's all relative.
