It's a taxi-cab. The round thing [with speedo cable going into it] was called a trip-ticker. It had a clock and an odometer inside it, and it calculated the fare based on both mileage and time. Next to it is a lock box where the money was kept... Notice the lock?:p

That technology came out in the late 50's and was used up to the early 70's. Having been installed in a 40's-early 50's car [guess-timating based on the dash], and having been mounted on the roof, I'm guessing it was a low income area, and the driver put it up there to fit more people in his taxi.

If you were a kid when these came out, it was on your short list of desired gifts.

The slant six would idle so smooth you could put a glass of water on the air cleaner of a tuned and running engine and it would barely ripple the surface. I did it many times but never got used to the angle of the engine.

Got one for Christmas, bout '54. Also got a thing called a "Click-Clack", have never seen another. We lived in the Santa Cruz mountains at the time so maybe it was a Nor-Cal thing.

Love that Hyper Pack /6. Just got rid of my D-100 with the Super 6 2 barrel. These things will run forever. Two and three hundred thousand miles is not uncommon.

This is the first McDonalds from 1955 in Illinois. Oh yeah, here's the original opening day menu menu too.
We went to one in Obio but I can tell you the place was packed and the coolest thing anyone had ever imagined. No wonder drive-ins drew the car guys.
I had a hamburger, fries and a shake. Probably chocolate.

  26. I'll take a shot at it. It looks like a speedometer cable connected to the cylindrical part. I am thinking it is a mileage recorder. Maybe mileage and speed both.

    Just a note:

The first McDonald's franchise (pre Ray Kroc) was located in Phoenix. Also the first to feature "Golden Arches", they were then later added to the original California location. The Ray Kroc Illinois franchise came a bit later and the McDonald brothers were finally bought out by 1961. Current McDonald's "official" records begin from the opening of Ray's first restaurant.

I wish we still had ours.:(

I've got my grandma's original down in the basement.
I have to try and fix the motor in the rotating light though.
