My name is andy, come from austria (upper austria, close to salzburg).
My friends and I would like to start a road trip in the south of us. And I have a lot of questions about this area. What is important to see, where are good restaurants, bars, car meetings and so on. I think a few people can help me to make this vacation to a real hot trip with a lot of music and cool cars.

We arrive on 03/25/2011 in Atlanta and start the road trip for 2 weeks.

    Route Start
    Atlanta
    Nashville
    Memphis
    New Orleans
    back to Atlanta

(excuse me for my english - I learn and learn ...)

    Thanks

    Regards
    Andy

Sounds like a good time, although it's not really the season for alot that's car related. Although I don't live in the south, I may be able to help a little. I visited Vienna last year and the people of Austria treated me great, so if I can return the favor let me know if you need any help, or have questions about the USA. Send a pm. thanks Chris

Check the Goodguys web page and see if there are any shows planned for the areas you will be in. If so, you can plan your trip around them.

  4. Sweetwater Tennesse for the underground lake / sea. Somewhere around there are also giant caves that you could park a semi in. The guide told us some bootleg stories.

Andy, I agree with the last poster, and try the Lonestar Roundup. For diners, you might want to check out the diners, drive-ins and dives website....depending on what city you want. Junkyards filled with old cars are disapearing fast , you may want to search the web depending on what city you're in. I suggest you try California if you want the whole American hotrod experiance.

  8. On your way from Atlanta to Nashville, let me suggest you to go there by way of Huntsville Alabama and stop at the NASA Space and Rocket center on Interstate 565.There isn't much auto related in this part of the country this time of year.If you want to visit the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee, its not that far from the Space and Rocket Center.
Chattanooga Tennessee has a lot of nature sites to visit. If you go there from Atlanta up the Interstate 75 you will pass a place called White,Georgia. They have an old car junk yard just a couple of miles east of the Interstate exit ramp.
There is this also just north of Nashville: [FONT=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]5th Annual March Madness Car Show Racing Event

  9. ATL to BNA(Nashville) means you gotta go thru Chattanooga---stop at Honest Charlie's and Coker Tire. National towing/wrecker museum is there too. Good call on Jack Daniel distillery----always a fun stop.

You really should consider the Lonestar roundup in Austin TX---no kiddin....I'd blow off Memphis completely in exchange for the Roundup;) Whaddya gonna see there anyway besides Graceland and Beale street? Texas has good BBQ--probably as good as Memphis'

Chattanooga has many sites worth visiting and is located between Atlanta and Nashville. The Jack Daniels tour is cool. When you are in Nashville you must visit the Station Inn. If possible on Monday night to see the Time Jumpers. http://www.stationinn.com/index.html For a good steak try Jimmy Kelly's http://www.jimmykellys.com/

If you go to Memphis, visit Sun Studios where Johnny Cash, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded. 45 minute tour that is very cool.

    Sounds like a great trip.

Welcome Aussies, I strongly suggest you rethink your itinerary to include the Don Garlits museum and the Daytona Speed way attractions in Florida. The Don Garlits museum is worth the trip if you see nothing else! Both are located within an easy drive from Atlanta. Also Joe's Speed shop in the Atlanta area has a lot of traditional hot rods and parts. If you go to The Garlits Museum be sure to allow a good amount of time there and be sure to see both the race car and the antique buildings. Also check out Florida's winter auto sports they have a lot of bracket drags and circle track stuff going on earlier in the year.

Well, this is no nore car related than "gentlemen's entertainment venues", but I'd be glad to try and take a day off work to show you guys some of the points of interest here in Montgomery, Al. We're close to Atlanta, and you could swing by on your way back from the Lonestar Roundup. :D

For anyone who has an interest in the civil rights movement in the south, a lot of that history took place right here. I'm always kind of amazed at the number of people that I've met who were directly involved in events over 50 years ago here.

Aside from that, just the usual street rod cruise-in type stuff going on in this area.

    Later, Kinky6

  15. @chrisinphilly: i was last year for a road trip in the west of US. huntington beach with the car meeting (donut derelicts) and lake havasu (rockabilly reunion). This was a great time with a lot of friendly people, great music and new friendship.

@mickeyc: 2008 I was on a roadtrip in florida. We saw also the daytona speedway (great) and we was also on daytona beach with some police control :)

@earl schieb: where is your speed shop? I´m very interested to visit your shop.

@all: thanks for your informations. there are a lot of interesting things ...

    keep on posting good informations

    regards

    Andy

I suggest you forget everything, head straight for Austin, TX for the Roundup on April 1. In fact, see if you can change your tickets and land somewhere in TX. Then the rest of your travel time head toward California. Take in the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Carlsbad Caverns, Moab, Las Vegas.

So which one of you has the Firebird i saw cruising through Salzburg?
    Don

  19. @Dometsch: Nobody have this firebird from my friends :)
    I sold for a few years a 72er chevy 454 to salzburg.

    Do you like salzburg?

  20. Austria, not Australia!

  21. @FUXL: That´s allright. When we order from austria something from the states. The normal post way is to australia and later to austria (Europa). Funny thing
