Pony car refers to Mustang, Barracuda, Javelin, Cougar, Camaro. Officially, that is.

And Add AMX, Challenger and some folks seem to think the Corvair fits as well (It doesn't, but you will find it listed) Falcon? No, it's a Compact car, along with the aforementioned Corvair, Valiants, Rambler American, Chevy II Nova, etc.

  5. Actually pony cars were a designation from clear back in the '50. They were cars designed to compete with the european Sports car market. Lowey coupes would have been pony cars as well as hudson hornets, Corvairs were considered ponycars as well as early corvettes.

There that ought to give the pot a stir.

Hmmm, the name Pony car supposedly came into being with the introduction of the Mustang in 64 1/2 as a play on the name (Mustang - Pony, get it?)
    More pot stirring

Seems to be a lot of definition and debate as to what a pony car is. A 64 1/2 Mustang is a re skinned Falcon, a 64 1/2 Mustang is definately a pony car, since a 64 Falcon is just a Mustang with a different hair do in theory it is a pony. Or a donkey.

Actually most of the "pony cars" are reskinned base model "economy" cars, Barracudas up to 1970 are re-skinned Valiants, I wouldn't call Camaros "reskinned" '68 up Novas, but they had quite a lot in common. The Mustang also had the wheelbase shortened compared to a Falcon. '66 and up the Falcon actually has more in common with the Fairlane, The greenhouse on my '67 Falcon is identical to the greenhouse on a '66-'67 Fairlane/Comet, as is the front stub under the sheetmetal. But still theres a strong family connection between the Falcon/Fairlane and the Mustang, up to 1970. But we digress...

The definition of terms is so watered down that it gets hard to place the car into it's proper place.Like the new Eastwood catalog having a pic of a 70's Chevelle being called a hotrod. Maybe it would be appropriate to get a concensus as to what some of these types of cars are. I don't really feel comfortable calling a 62 Catalina a muscle car Do you? If I did I think I would rather call it Early 60's muscle stop it at 64 and and call all after 64, 65 and up muscle era cars.I think the term Pony was really aimed at the female market segment, the Mustang really had a lot more appeal to a lady than a Falcon. So back to the OP question. Pre pony wars pony car, Early 60's intermediate, whats the concensus?

I really think we already have consensus on the "are falcons pony cars" question, with only one dissenting voice. ;)
