recently i have lowered my car and did everything the way its saposed to be and my car has a terible chatter when i get going around 65,70. I had a good friend who is a great fabricator ride with me and check it out and it seems ither its my spring or rearend. The question!!! can dearching your springs make them not work!!! in other words can at high speeds the spring not be able to take the chatter out of the road. or is it something els?? ive narowed it down to ither the spring or the rear end so im going to change out the rear end to the old one that was in it and hope it will be ok if not what do i do abou the rear springs?? thanks for your guys help Timmy
oh and its not the rims eather they have been on my car for 5 years and never done this i did put one diffrent one because one got messed up and its in the front so and the vibreation is in the rear
I'd check tire balance if not done yet, then would start looking for an incorrect pinion angle or out of balance driveshaft.
Does it still run the torque tube or is it an open driveline? Not enough information on the lowering to tell much really
How did you drop it "the way it's supposed to be done". You'd think the problem would be something you've changed (ie: pinion angle?)
If you feel the chatter in the seat of your pants, it is in the drive line which includes engine, trans, drive shaft, and rear axle ***y. If you feel it in the steering wheel it is most likely in the wheel balance or spindle ***y. By the way, de arching the springs or heating,cutting coils is not the correct way. Spindles, springs shackles and spring hangers designed for your vehicle is the correct way and does not affect drive line geometry. .
i had a similar problem and found it to be the rear end was at too much of an angle causing the drive shaft yoke to hit.
the wheels are balanced and I set the pinion angle 3 degreas down from 0 I was told to do this because when its under lowed it will be around 0 and its lowerd with 4 inch blocks and de arched springs. so over all its about 6 inch
oh and i took the drive shaft back to be checked and they said ti was fine i do have an adapter u joint in the back but i dont see how that would mess with the alignment of it its an adapter for a later 10 bolt where the u joint is pressed in with some strap style holders to hold it into the yoke
sorry i thought i had enough info didnt want to have to much text lol but i changed it a while back to a 5 speed and a 10 bolt witch word perfect and then I lowerd it more and put a diffrent 10 bolt out of a later axle and its been doing this ever since so its ither the springs or the rear end
im pretty sure my friend and I pulled the pumpkin and the gears look great!! but i have been thinking of just giving in and putting the old one back in with new wheel bearings
My opinion is that you have the vibration due to incorrect pinion angle. Since your ride is a taildragger setting the pinion angle downward combined with the nose up at***ude which points the trans tailshaft downward this produces a weird angle of drive shaft operation. The angles of the trans and the rear end create a jump rope effect with the driveshaft and become more pronounced as the speed increases. The vibration is form the u-joints as they try to operate out of alignment.
alright thanks man thats the type of answere i was looking for i guess ill try and shim it and see where it needs to be i take it it should be some where around 0 then since its 3 degrease down. thats what i was thinking too but i had a bunch of people saying other wise any body know where to get some shims for the spring bads???
3 degrees down is correct, but not off the ground, pinion angle is set off crankshaft centerline. do a search there about 400 threads/arguements on it already.
see but thats the thing is that my car is damn near level all the way down the line when its on the ground but i think it could come up to zero... I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO IS GIVING ME FEED BACK !!!! thanks a lot guys
dont matter about where the car sits unless your motor is level with teh ch***is. if not your pinion angle is off.
thats what im saying is my drive shaft is practily level from the ****** to the rearend with all the weight on it
is the harmonic balancer higher or lower than the tailshaft of the trans? driveshaft angle, ch***is angle, or driveway angle have nothing to do with pinion angle. crankshaft centerline and pinion centerline only thing that matters.
My experience has been that you want your drive shaft centerline and the pinion center line not 0 degrees but no more than 3 degrees out at the rear joint. if it is 0 degrees your needle bearings will not rotate or roll inside the caps and will flatten out. I agree with **** SpaDaro on this one........just my 2 cents worth
