Hot Rods SCORED A DEUCE - Still Can't Believe It !!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daddy_o's_diner, Jan 6, 2011.

  1. Verified the drivetrain today.

'65 327 CI 275HP out of a 4-speed car. It's running 2.02 camel humps and a 30-30 solid lifter cam. Currently an Edelbrock intake with a 650 holley. Soon to be a fully polished 6x2 with chrome Strombergs and some frog mouth scoops.

Wow, that's a score and one interesting car. But inquiring minds want to know how much room there is inside it to actually sit in the seat and drive.

  6. Not only is it channelled 10 inches and chopped 4, but the firewall is recessed over 8.5 inches!!!
I started my diet today. LOL.
It's not as bad as you think and will be better after I build a new seat for it.

Saw the car after lunch today and it has great possibilities. I'm afraid I willl NOT be bugging him to sell it to me as I've got a severe case of "anti push-away from the table disease". Besides, with him so close and making changes maybe it will get me off me**** and start the long planned build on my own 5w (wouldn't that be a miracle:rolleyes:)
He has already changed the grille and headlights so I'm expectng the makeover will continue. He mentioned about trying to get it to the basement at Cobo so the motivation is high.

  10. Um, don't you have a '35 to finish - and a Model 40 and a deuce?????

I don't have any of my notes here on the history, but I will try to post some in the next few days. I'm still learning more everyday. The car has only had 3 owners since the 1950's. The most recent was Wayne "Smitty" Smith (RIP).

Tires are going to make a HUUUUUUUGGGGGEEE difference on this car. If you throw a set of 8.20's or maybe a bit skinnier slicks and Chrome steelies with 5.60's up front that thing is going to be killer!!!!

I think thats "Sam" in the 1st pic.. One of Waynes good friends who also passed. Question, what size are the rear tires on todays version?

  18. Slim,
I had****umed that was Smitty, but you think it was Sam?

As far as tire size, they are too big by too radial.

    Wheels and tire are next.

LOL... I'm maybe downsize'n my rear tire to that size!
If all goes well here is a pic of Sam.. (Wayne was a short guy)
I came across a pic of Wayne and the coupe not too long ago but WHERE is the problem.. I know a guy ( nice to know people) who was in that early 70s era, did the club news letter for close to 20 yrs hes in poor health and I'm do to call him. I'll see what he has for pics....
Personaly I like the race car version the best (no hood etc)

  21. Thats's the plan.

I'm thinking some 28.75" x 8.75 " Hurst pie crust cheaters on chrome reverse. I'll drop the rear just a little to set the body line just over the tire.

Hey Dave, I love having the car referred to as "Smitty's old Deuce because Smitty was a great friend of mine, but I really need to see my other friend's name on it too. Bob Pelton (who was my younger daughter's God Father) originated this build and sold it to Smitty before ever getting it on the street. I was mortifyed when I found out he sold it without consulting me, however, it couldn't have gone to a better man than Smitty. Smitty's friend's, Joe Brown and Al Livigne helped him with the finished product.

  23. Steve,

Thanks for everything. I am so stoked about getting started on this thing. I appreciate all your help and including all the "old" parts in the deal.

I look forward to learning more of the cars history. I chatted with Joe brown and he is a wealth of information on the car. I look forward to speaking with him more when he returns from Florida in March.

    Is Bob still around?

Bob is still around but he is not on the computer too much. I forwarded this link to his wife. I hope he gets it. The good thing is that I tracked him down when I acquired the coupe after losing contact with him for many years.

Dave, I spoke with Bob Pelton Sunday evening. He said I could give you his number, which I will send in a PM. Sam's coupe, "She Bad" resides in Massachusetts with his oldest son. The 1034 race car is up in Turner, Maine. The Maine Baron's Race Team still campaign's the car in Maxton, NC, Loring, ME, and Bonneville, per Sam's will. His son Greg piloted it over 200 MPH year before last which was always Sam's goal to do.

I left Maine to seek my fortune in '72 or so, and was involved in DESRO from the beginning. I don't recognize this coupe from then. Perhaps later...?
