FYI, I saw some other posts of cars at NE dragway and they had the same starter (with long mustache) as this one. He was there a long time.....

    Plum,

Thanks for the pit shot of Ron Potter's Golden Nugget. Have not seen that one.
Before Ron starting running the AA/FC he ran A/FD then AA/FD
in a mid-west circut with my Dad ( I was on the pit crew like most
racer's kids) always running the Golden Nugget them. The AA/FD
actually had a small golden nugget worked into the cowl's paint job of a comic
prospector in action. Just wondering if you or anybody else had any info
on Ron. I heard he was in an accident in the AA/FC. Something about
the cage not being installed to the proper measurements, too large in the
head area, (he is a shorter man) & bounced his head around pretty good in
the wreck, but this is just what I heard. Of what I know he never raced again.
That'a a shame because he was a great competitor & a winner. Won the Spring Nats
at National Trial the first year with the AA/FC if I remember right.
Thanks for any info. - Smoke

P.S. & Thanks for all the hard work posting those great shots. It sure makes a cold ass winter a little easier to handle.

Thanks for the conformation. That's what I suspected based on the poor
conditon I was told he was in after the accident. Just dug up on the web it
was Lakeland FLA in 1973, if that's true. We were still running AA/FD at that time & lost track of him since he was on the AA/FC circut. Nice to have some
closer on a good guy who helped my Dad (& me) back in the day.
    Thanks again. - Smoke

Here is a picture of my old dragster. My only car that I ever made money with. Started with an honest to god DZ302 completely stock and ran 10 teens @ 140. Didn't completely drain the block one winter and pooched the side out. Put in a fresh 350 with ported heads (Hot Rod Shop) and ran 9 O's @ 155. Wish I still had the car. No no no I wish I still fit in the car hehehe.
Is old Mel one of the coolest starters you ever saw. I know you didn't want to mess in the staging lane.

Picture of Clorox in 1974 at Kansas City International Raceway. Morton Marlatt let me and my best friend help him wrench on his car. We were 13 and still riding our bikes all over town when we happened upon the Depot. He had this garage around back at the old defunct train depot. He always had time to let us help. What a pain in the ass we were, but he never let on.

Mort won his Super Stock class that year. He would pull this car behind his 74 Monte Carlo and race the tow car in Street Eliminator? Street Stock?
Anyway, I got this picture when he took us to race one Sunday. He was cool.

Cool story. I wish I would have been a little more bold when I was peeking in at Dick Harrell's shop in KC.

That's not KCIR; the KCIR staging lanes are on the other side of the track.

Thanks, Everyone, for taking the time to post such great pictures for all of us to enjoy...especially those of us that were not born yet, or lucky enough to enjoy it in person.

Plum, the clarity of you photos give me a feeling of actually being there, especially in some of those pit shots. Amaizing stuff.
