So, I called the winner last night with the dirty little motive of trying to talk him out of the motor. Quite frankly, when someone off the board won the motor I got pretty excited. It was really the only clean way that I could end up with it... and I wanted it bad! We went over shipping logistics, etc.. and then I just straight up asked, "hey man, are you intersested in selling the motor" for an unmentionable price. His response? "Actually, I don't want to sell it. I've heard all of these great things about how it was built and then the event itself was just so inspiring that I think it was just meant to be. I'm hooked." As soon as he said that, I found a big *** grin on my face. I think the only other place I'd want that motor to be (other than in my garage!) is in someone else's garage effecting them the way my little small block nailed me some 8 or so years ago. We got a new guy into the same **** we are fellas... He should be on the HAMB soon. Fred, Dave, and all the fellas that helped get this motor together - you guys did a pretty wonderful thing...
Spreading the gospel! That is the most incredible feeling to know that you, the HAMB, the event, HOOKED someone! Viva La HAMB!
its a slippery slope, but DAMN if the ride aint a fun one Cool to hear he's got the bug, and he's gonna hang out. that keeps the HAMB motor #3 close to the family as it gets
Kansas City guy, right? P*** it on that I'd be happy to lend a hand and an eye now and then with whatever he decides to put it in.
Kinda sounded like he didnt have a clue one as to what to do with it when you talked to him over the PA at MOKAN,,, but hell. THIS is honestly an even BETTER story for him in the long run... "I got my start in hot rods by winning a motor that i had NO idea what to do with. . . next thing i know all these guys i dont know are helping me build a car to wrap around it!" how ****in cool is THAT **** i ask ya?
I just got off the phone with Tim ....we are hashing out the final details on the shipping to K.C. ....this guy is stoked ...and i cant wait for him to get on the HAMB as well..............i hope to have it shippesd out to him in the next week or so ...and look forward to seeing Tim's progress with it.......... I'm tickled to death that its the inspiration to get another into this hobby.......... Fred
I think for a new guy to the hobby... a starter project should be: 1) No a frame-off or ground up project. 2) Something that you can buy motor mounts and aftermarket suspension up grades for. 3) Relatively CHEAP to build... i.e. a "starter" car priced under 5k... maybe even 3k... or, depending on your status... maybe even as high as 10k (less work to get it on the road!) Here's a few, maybe he'll hop on this thread and get some ideas! Sam. http://www.craigslist.org/nby/car/95611752.html http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/96117324.html http://www.craigslist.org/sby/car/94254578.html http://www.craigslist.org/sfc/car/95940001.html If it were me... I'd go with the last one... the '56 Chevy 150 two door wagon... with a 327, four speed... chrome reversed wheels, blackwall bias-plys... pie crust slicks in the back... mmmmmmmm!!! Sam.
He's got big eyes... When I was talking to him, he mentioned he was looking for an early 30s ford coupe. I think Reggie's '34 really had an effect on him.
I was a little hesitant when I found the engine was won by a non-Hamber, but this outcome is a win-win deal. Hope he gets something on the road with the new engine and REALLY becomes one of us. Frank
Hell Ryan, if his coupe dont have that effect on just about ANYONE... they are either sleeping or dead. Reggies car had me from hello down there at the hotel friday night
Any updates on the motor? I know that Brian B*** is working on his buddy Lindsey's Model A, but I never heard any updates on this motor. I know that Sam & BellM are the only ones to use/get running a raffle motor......I think. Chris Oh yea, sorry for "internet digging", but KC is snowed in today and I was sorta' wondering what ever happened to the "Raffle motors".
the raffle motor i won in 06(?) is still sitting patiently waiting for me to get my 53 done. then i can start on my 29 model A sedan which will receive the HAMB motor. the slow economy as well as myself not getting garage time has slowed progress but i hope to get off my *** soon. if i can sell my 48 it would speed progress but i'm not trying to hard to sell as i'd like to keep it as well. later jim
Won the only non Chevy that Fred built for a raffle engine, a 289 Ford. Won it in 2004, lots of people got to see me real happy teary eyed that evening. Put it in an old 'gl*** '32 I had, real sweet engine, put several thousand miles on it, took it back to the HAMB Drags 3 or 4 years ago, made 1 p*** at Mokan. Sold it, car now resides in Oklahoma. Good memories, my first HAMB Drags, I bought $125 worth of raffle tickets and won! Still got the carb, Holley 650 dbl pumper donated by Denise's dad, was on the Chevy engine in my '27 Roadster that I blew up last year.
I really like this old post regurgitation , kinda' like "Where are they now?". How many raffle engines were there? and do you have one ?
