Buyers who say they want it andthen fade away.

  1. It's called "networking". Using all resources afforded you to make that sale. Kinda like saturation or carpet bombing.....you're more likely to hit something;)

fng here, i buy and sell a lot on another site, but recently had to squash a deal, where one day i did not get my cash so i told the uy so i would not string him along,,....so i asked to cancell and did so through my fav auction site, next day boom i had the money, so i told him i got the cash afterall and asked for pickup to save $100 on shipping, i got no response for three days so i bought somewhere else. then on a weekend morning i get an email asking to pickup...how? you never gave me your address or any contact info, not even a fu to my email days earlier. but most folks are cool.

As a seller I've learned not to get too excited until it's paid for. Sometimes it's a 50/50 bet if the sale goes through or not. Breeder is correct, lots of booze and late night computer surfing brings this result. As a buyer I get excited when the parts show up.

Up until last year, I had great luck on here both buyin and selling. Since then not so much. I even participated in some good-faith deals only to get stiffed in the long run. I guess it's a sign of the times. Both instances, the buyers copped an attitude stating they were unemployed and didn't have the source of income even after I sent the part. I know it's my fault, I shouldn't have turned over the merchandise before I received payment but figured since some of these guys were so called ol' school HAMB members it be no problem. I was wrong. Anyway, I've learned my lesson and to answer your question, people are a lot more flakey than they used to be...

People aren't perfect and not always that considerate, it's called life. Selling stuff isn't always fun or easy. If it was, people wouldn't have to pay you that much for it. Sell stuff cheap and I bet the problem goes away for the most part. The more you ask relative to what it is worth, the more the pain in the ass.

I don't bother to sell much because its just not my thing and usually don't want to be bothered with all the hassle for a few extra bucks. If I really want to get rid of something and don't want to just give it to someone or throw it away, I just low ball the price and let it go asap and move on. I don't want to spend hours dealing with trying to milk the price on something. I have other things I want to do with my time and all this stuff is just part of that and never going to change. That is just how some people are.

If you are doing this more for business than for fun, even more reason to just realize that is how some people are. It's just business, factor it in and don't take it personal and move on to someone who will actually buy it.

Oh another side point, don't even try to give something away for free on CL, etc. You talk about flakes and freaks, try that and see who shows up. Much better to charge a firm $5-10 than to try to be nice and just give something for free to the random freaks that cruises CL. For the times I was stupid enough to do it, some of the best responses I got were from people saying they wanted it and wanted to know if I could deliver it to them too, for free of course. Or I tell them it is too big/heavy to fit in a car and bring a real truck and they show up in a Honda and want to waste my time trying to fit it in.

To minimize the pain in the ass factor, just charge a good reasonable cheaper price, not to much and not too little either, and the sales will be much easier. Too high, or too low sometimes and you are asking for it basically.

A guy posted a 302/c4 a while back. I said I wanted it (right after he posted it) and never heard back after 3 messages. Did it sell that fast or does he have A.D.D. and forgot he was selling it? Can't blame the economy for that!

    Let me play devils advocate:

2 years ago I was selling a 55 Ply. and just after i put it on CL my youngest daughter got sick and had to be flown out to Tucson. After a week and a half the ordeal was over and I made it back home to my email access. Some guy never called the posted cell # just emailed me, and he chewed my ass for mot getting back to him. He left several emails each nastier than the last. I only replied to his last one explaining to him what my family had gone through and that he was NOT welcome to but the car. I never heard from him again and sold it locally the following week.

The thing i run into is sellers that dont really want be a good seller.

    Seller: Quickchange rear, complete.

Me: sounds good, I like the price, and even the gear ratio's right-what's the width?

Seller: Hold on, i'll measure it for you and then sell it to someone else.

What rubs me the wrong way is when someone lists something for sale, youre the first to pm them that you want it...never hear anything, then they post that it's gone. Huh? If I took the time to pm you...you should at least return the favor..dont just dont make an update on the ad that requires the prospective buyer to stumble across the thread again to hear something.....maybe I'm sensitive.....just looking for simple courtesy.

I was being sarcastic when I said it was a sign of the times. Principle and integrity will never go out of style...

When shipping heavy items the best way I have found is to use Good Stuff a can of expandable foam, take the box even a thin one spray a layer on the bottom let it set 10-20 min take the part put in a trash bag get all the air out then place it in the box (so foam will not stick to part) then fill the box with the rest of the foam but leave some room for expansion. let cure over night and good to go.. It will never break out of package makes a solid mass glued togeather. The part is a little hard to get out but will always get there safe and sound without alot of work or expense. I have shipped at least a hundread sets of bbc heads this way without one issue.

I fully understand a person not be able to follow through and buy something as 'stuff" happens. What bugs me is when the buyer doesn't have the courtesy to let you know he won't be able to buy or changed his mind.

I admire your integrity. I have also found out that I sold an item too cheap before shipping it - but I still follow through with the sale anyway and don't tell the buyer "it's already sold" to get out of the sale. That's unethical. What goes around comes around.

Agreed. I frequently will sent a fellow an item before getting paid for it - after talking with the buyer on the phone. Again, communication is important.
