David Dunbar Buick was a great engineer who started out in plumbing fixtures. He invented the process for coating iron with porcelain for bathroom fixtures. It was also said that he invented the lawn sprinkler.

Whats interesting is that Charles Nash was the president of General Motors before quitting to form Nash motors. He didnt think General Motors would last.

He also stole G.Ms head Engineer

    Kinda funny huh?

Funny that this should come up right now.
It's been answered here so I'm not going to look it up but I was reading about this just the other night in Rod & Custom or Street Rodder.

Think the newest Rod & Custom.
I never knew the history either till then.
Mr. Chevrolet left the company because he wanted to build higher end cars instead of the average working man cars.
I believe that it said that he went to the grave without much money to his name.
He left the company just a little too soon to have made the big bucks.

    J. Frank Duryea was the brother that built Americas first gas powered automobile not his brother Charles. They won the first automobile race held in the USA, and later won the first ever London to Brighton Run in England.John and Horace Dodge had a machine shop and built motors for Olds and Ford years before starting Dodge Brothers car production in 1914. It may have been a DB built motor in the Olds Pirate that raced at the first Ormond Beach meet, just north of Daytona. The Chevrolet brothers built speed equipment for Model T Fords, finished 5th in the INDY 500 with a Model T equiped with one of their Frontenac heads. The Stanley twin brothers, Francis E. and Freeland O. built the most steam powered cars in the USA, and set a LSR of 127.66 in 1906.

Morris Garages was an Oxford sales agency for Morris, where sales manager Cecil Kimber (1888-1945) began putting together sporting versions of Morris cars.

Morris was named for company founder William Richard Morris (1877-1963), who became Lord Nuffield in 1934. The Morris Motor Company, with MG and acquisitions Riley and Wolseley together formed the Nuffield Organization until merging with Austin in 1952 to form the British Motor Corporation.

  10. All of those early names were from an era when real men were proud to put their own name on a product they were responsible for.
Not like todays corporate PANSIES who hide behind some BULLSHIT made up name that means nothing, that and a gaggle of lawyers, LLC, etc.

  11. How about that guy who was born in Argentina and decided to build tractors in Italy.
Also a few fast cars to his name. DETOMASO.

    No joke! LOL

    "How about 'Probe'?"
    "Hmmm... I like it..."
    "Should we focus-group test it?"
"Nah, it's good -- go with it!"

since someone brought up the Chevrolet "Bowtie" at Gaston, and Louis' gravesite, the legend has been that when the brothers emigrated to the US, they stayed at a Hotel in Plainfield, NJ, and the infamous and now iconic design was the repeated image on the wallpaper, and adopted as what would become the corporate logo?

Not sure about Pontiac, but Cadillac was named after the founder of Detroit, a French colonial official called:

Antoine Laumet de La Mothe Sieur De Cadillac.

He founded Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit in 1701 and commanded there until 1710, when he was appointed as Governor of Louisiana until 1716. His family crest is the Cadillac emblem.

I think Louis Chevrolet had a sister too. They called her Big Block because she was some serious cubic inches.
