Well, life gave me a curve ball as it does from time to time, and I am moving to Anchorage, Alaska on the 15 of Jan. Richard D and I have been getting all my tools and hot rod stuff into storage. Lets just say a overloaded trailer, and the possibilities of breaking down in 60 below in the Yukon, didn't seem like a good option. So, I'll be back down for my stuff in Sept, when all the traffic is leaving AK.

One to give credit where credit is due. I would like to thank ryan for having the Hamb. Honestly my time probably would have been horrible here in texas with the people I met here on the hamb. Richard D and Samm Navarro are great guys. I am hoping to find some more hot rod people in alaska.

So, If your Alaskan (I was born and raised up there) know of any fun projects, need help or want to bench race let me know. Also, If any hamber come up on vacation, let me know. wont have anything for ya to look at, but shooting the **** about a hot rod or two is better then talking about swamp buggies and snowmachine mods any day.

you could say that. Finally got the job I wanted. I am a Tech at a Cadillac dealership, and have been trying to get into the Service Writing side of the business. My oldest friend is a head hunter up there for a couple of dealerships and she had a writing position .... more then doubling what I currently make. so yes. one could say I going for gold.

  4. Going home is a good thing at least that's what I have heard. Hope it works out for ya.

Wow! You do realize that it gets really, really cold in Alaska? I mean nut-freezin' cold.
Guess with all that extra income you will be able to buy lots of thermal underware!
Best of luck and I hope it all goes well for you.

Good luck with the move. I think you need to build a track T set up for ice racing...

  11. Lots of Hot Rod activities, local Drag Strip, Corvette ***oc, Car Shows, Show and Shine and so on. When you arrive, look up the Midnite Sun Street Rod ***oc, good group of folks. They have a web site.
Myself and 2 Friends formed the Anchorage Corvette ***oc in 71, was the largest Vette Group per capita in the U S at one time. Still going strong, they used to have an Annual Vette show during the Fur Rondevous Parade at the Local Chevy dealership, Alaska Sales and Service, (also the local Cadillac dealer, prob where you are going to be employed)
In 73 I founded the Midnite Sun Street Rod ***oc, started small about 7 or 8 of us but it soon grew to be the largest Hot Rod group in AK. You will be surprised at the number of Hot Rod stuff that is up there. The ALCAN (now the Alaskan Hiway) is actually really nice compared to earlier years, many improvements. I have driven it 31 times, both ways, since I moved to Alaska in Jan 64. yes, summer and winter and everthing in between. If you are driving in the fall, I would plan on the trip after Labor Day, most wussies have left by then and a lot less Motor Home Traffic, they are usually the traffic problem on the ALCAN, they take their half out of the middle and stop in the middle of nowhere to takes pics blocking the road!! Be sure to have a good camera for all the wild life you will see along the way in Canada and AK.
Bill Conn (CONMAN) is a former Alaskan too, he can give some input also.
Also a local Speedshop on Fairbanks street, (Steve Deptula's) a couple of old time Drag Racers/Hot Rodders, like myself.
I built my 71 Vette,40 coupe, 34 sedan and most of my Deuce in Anchorage in the 60s andearly 70s. Summer days are long and winter nights are long but we always managed to make it year round. I have been there off and on since 64. Fishin is always good!!!
Good Luck on your new effort, but then, you are an "ALASKAN" so not to new to you!!!!!

Sounds like you have a pretty good opportunity up there. Good luck with it. I've heard the fishing is pretty good up there too, except you might have to fight a bear for your catch. :D

A new job that pays more than double what you currently make would be hard to p*** up especially since you were born and raised there. Good luck with the move. All the best to you.

OH NO!! More Texans in Alaska! I'm pretty sure I am the only human that ever did that in reverse.
I hope you do well up there. It is more awesome than all the other states put together. Hotrodding is a ***** though.

I have to ask, have you ever seen 60 below? Even 30 below is really dangerous if you get stranded. 60 can kill you quick, it ain't something to take lightly or underestimate. And it is 200-300 between stops up in the Yukon with no cell phone service. There's no way to get your vehicle or yourself ready for that in Texas. I'd say store everything and fly up, buy a rusted out beater 4x4 when you get there. Seriously

And tell Deptula JB says Hi if you meet him. He used to be one of my main vendors when I had a shop in Anch.

    Levi,

Let the HAMB know your travel itinerary and see of a few of the local HAMBers will catch up with you for a meal and a beer as you p*** on thru.

If you happen into Seattle and are laying over for the evening, depending on the timing my dad is always up to bs about hotrods over a beer (or three) at one of the local haunts.

Did several 90 day TDY's (temporary duty) flying air search & rescue out of Elmendorf in 70/72....Great place during the summer, winters......not so great. :D Used to have a good drag strip south of Anchorage. (still active?) Darren Snelson, and Bob Lunsford were guys to watch back then.....****, just typing this brought back a flood of memories.

    Anyway, wish you the best...

Damn, you did grow up there.... everyone in the "lower 48" thinks a snowmachine is the same as a snow blower....haha....
    I grew up in Wasilla.:D

  22. Is that one of those big track thingies like they have up at Timberline Lodge?

Alaska is a pretty cool place. I only made it up that way once for a couple of days. Caught a halibut as big as a surf board. I would go back today if I had a chance, guess my next hot rod would have to be a '49 Power Wagon.

  23. Nexussian is up there and has a Landspeed car.

    Good luck!

Good luck....I worked as a service and parts director at a Cadillac dealer for almost 25 years. I started as a service writer became service manager and then service and parts director. You should have a lot of opportunity for advancement and for now the more you write the more you make....Not a bad deal.....again GOOD LUCK

I was born in Anchorage and my folks are now living in North Pole.

  30. Dale and Darry Snelson ran the the "Humpin Huskey", a 48 Anglia, Dale still lives in Palmer, runs a Carb shop. Same location as the "Polar Dragway". Darry's son Derrick puts on the annual Hot Rod and Custom car show. Bobby Lunsford ran the "Silly Bear Special" Hemi powered Altered. And there was the Moore Bros- Jimmy and Orval, Steve Deptula, Clarence LaMay, Tony Prockish, John Childs, Tom Irvine, Jim Dixon, myself and many others.
There were the Swappers, Demons, and a couple others.
The Drag Strip still is active in Palmer which is about 40 miles east of Anch.
The Meyers Bro's United Auto Supply known as the "Mouse House" was one of the Speed Shops in Anch, Steve Deptula started another one and is still in operation today.
