    I still have mine that I bought in 1959 a bunch more. I used to have to borrow against my allowance to buy the .75 special editions at the grocery store in Winslow Wa then.

    My plan even then was to have my own library of car books and magazines connected to my garage.

  16. First American Hot Rod mags I bought were the May 1997 Street Rodder & June '97 R&C on my 15th birthday, still have them. The oldest Hot Rod magazine issue I own is the December '48 HOT ROD.

    COMPLETE set of HOTROD, COMPLETE set of CAR Craft, COMPLETE set of R&C, and almost complete sets of most other automotive titles, then again I started collecting them back in the 70's. Sold off all the FORD and CHEVY specific titles to other collectors. I can't begin to imagine the money I've spent on plastic bags to put them all in.

    got almost every car magazine i've bought since 1960. cataloged and safely stored.
    BTW anyone remember STREET ROD magazine? sadly i missed the last two issues.
    figger when i die my wife will 'discard' them with 'extreme pleasure'! unless someone
    wants to offer me a decent price for everything, while i'm still breathing. {the subscription deals a great-these-days! i signed-up for street rodder from the publisher/editor himself in 1972? last year jerry dixey and brian brennan had great deals at detroit's autorama!}

    thanx red

  22. Awww man, my first one was November Hot Rod with Lloyd Bakan's coupe by the pool, so ya beat me! Kept that issue and used Lloyd's car as inspiration for my own coupe 50 years later!

    But ya beat me to the line that really counts - the build. I'm still gatherin' parts for that "someday" Flatty ride, more than likely an open "A" something or other. Think young forever, only the toys get older!

    I believe the first rodding mag I ever bought was Street Rodder, maybe 1990 or something. I do still have it somewhere. It was what was on the cover that made me buy it:

    "Build a Hot Rod for $2500"

    I was 16 and moving from scale models to the full-scale ones. I never built that glass T-bucket, thankfully. But I was hooked on rodding since I opened that cover.

    I used to buy them just to cut out some cool car pics. THEN , I started reading them! I was hooked since 1972 . I also started collecting and have 1956 to present Hot Rod , 1959 to 85 Popular Hot Rodding , 1957 to now Car Craft , and yes I still have my first mag.

  27. I sold 300-400 when I joined the Navy in 1959. that included all Hot Rod mags from 53-59. then gave away more than that when I sold my first house in 1974. and now have several hundred I'd sell to someone local, that includes several Vol. 1's including The Rodders Journal in mint condition. I've given boxes away to young rodders that have helped me over the years. but the one magazine that I've always saved is the little book April 56 with George Cerneys Plymouth wagon on the cover
