other than the escape from serious injury, the thing that impressed me the most was the huge variety of cars entered. What a far cry from the "jelly bean" racing that NASCAR and organized drag racing has become today.

Heck, what cars today aren't "jellybean"? As long as the redneck's keep buying tickets, NASCAR will keep pushing the **** they have since the early '70's. Same with NHRA.
Racing is about entertainment and corporate sales these days, nothing else.

  6. heheheheee. I love the crashes. I know it's childish and shallow, but I con't help it. As a former NASCAR fan I love to see the cl***ics, I haven't watched a race for a couple of years, lost interset after Pontiac was dropped......but crashes are cool no matter what era.

Part of the reason for that is because this was the "Sportsman" race at Daytona. That's the series that evolved into today's "Nationwide Series". The rules about what you could run in that race were much more relaxed than the "Grand National" series which required new cars no older than 4 model years.

Those '55 and '56 Fords probably had 427's in them.

    I don't think they had 427s in 1960. But, maybe 352s and 348s!!!!!!

  12. Not aware of the Sportsman rules of 1960;I imagine they were less restrictive than the Grand National rules. That being said,Fords might have been 390's,Chevy might have still had 348's(maybe a 409 snuck out the back door in Warren?) and Mopar would have probably used early hemis and early RB mills. I'm just guessing here;because of the less restrictive age rules, there could have been a plethora of car/engine combos.

Would love to hear from someone who was there and would know what was running. The cl*** "Early Stock Car Racing" at HAMB University is now in session...

I wonder what the teacher's gonna look like this year? WHOA!!!

This was the "sportsman" cl***, the rules were considerably more liberal. Engine swaps, non-factory speed equipment, ect. Oops, day late and a $ short, as usual.

Amazing...What a diverse variety of cars, looks like mostly anything from in between 1939 and ~1957. SUPER that such footage should exist and survive to this day, the roar of the engines of the leading cars after the pace car exits while "150 MPH" is mentioned really sounds sweet, looks like they´re really "hauling" too...Cool:)

I've seen that somewhere but still love it!
that was racing at it's best. Not the watered down version we have today.
I gave up on Nascar about 5 years ago.

I would like to see them take todays car out of the show room add a few safety features and race them right out of the box like back in the day. Truly "stock" cars.

IIRC the factory backed (HEY! Thats not very "sportsmanlike!) Fords in this race had big MEL's. The body/engine manufacturer didnt even have to match up in sportsman. Couple of years later, LeeRoy Yarbrough won this race in a 427 FE powered '53 Studebaker.

Amazing what's possible when they allow innovation by individuals and don't micromanage the rule book to the point where the only cars in the field are $500,000 cookie cutter cars with 40 person support crews and being off in height by 1/8" or less will get you disqualified.
